Thanks for the warning. Can I opt out of upgrading to the Anniversary Update? And if I do opt out, will it adversely affect future Windows 10 updates?

In Windows Update advanced settings, there is a "defer upgrades" option that you can select. This puts you on what they are calling the "stable branch for business", which will delay Anniversary Update (or similar future major updates) for 4-6 months --- presumably you will get a more stable experience after they clean up the issues, but eventually they will force it out.

Even if you go through other means to delay it further, they will eventually stop offering security updates for version 1511 so you will need to upgrade then. (I believe the policy is to continue offering security updates for just one year, starting from when a newer version is put on the stable branch for business.)

Just to add to what I wrote yesterday, there have been reports (Google News) in the past couple of days that Microsoft fixed the freezing issue, so like an idiot I decided to try again. Unfortunately, after downloading the latest version of the anniversary update I went through the entire process again only to find the same problems. Laptop freezes after the login, touchpad does not work, wireless USB mouse does not work (even when connected via cable) and it keeps crashing. Thankfully moving back to the previous build is quite simple and quick but have still just wasted another 90 minutes or so of my life only to end up back were I was.

To fix the freezing issue, use the Intel rapid storage driver for the AHCI controller instead of the generic Microsoft one.
Not sure about those other issues... I've run into a bit of trouble with the anniversary update as well, I've turned the "Defer upgrades" option on and from now on I'm waiting at least 3 months before upgrading to a new major build...

    Thanks, Aaron44126.

I turned on the "Defer upgrades" option after my first failed attempt to install the Anniversary Update but thought I would try again this weekend, especially after those news articles claimed that Microsoft had fixed the freeze issue, but it ended up in exactly the same mess as last time.

I did come across an article referencing the AHCI controller you mention, and a couple of other tips and tricks, but now that I have tried to upgrade twice am going to wait a while longer before trying again.

I am very, very pleased with Windows 10, it is faster and seems smoother and cleaner than anything I have had previously there are just issues with the Anniversary Update which I am sure Microsoft will eventually fix.

Very impressed also how easy it is to "Return to the previous build" which puts you back in exactly the same spot as when you attempted the update.

If some of the programmes I use daily were not obsolete and discontinued I would probably try and do a clean install and see if that works better. I did that on another machine and it seemed to work very well.

Trying to get the card reader to work on my m6600. It works on one m6600 but not the other after the Windows 10 upgrade. Not sure I want to reinstall all the Windows 7 drivers, but can not figure out which of the 15 or so drivers on the m6600 Windows 7 list would be specifically for the card reader.

    The list of drivers:
    01 Intel Chipset
    02 Dell System Software
    03 Micro Memory Card
    04 Serial ATA Storage
    05 Video Graphics
    06 HD Audio
    07 Intel LAN Network
    08 System Utilities
    09 Security
    10 Wireless Network
    11 Dell Bluetooth 375
    12 Alps TouchPad
    13 STM Free Fall Sensor
    14 Intel Management Engine
    15 Intel Identity Protection Technology
    16 RENESAS USB 3.0
    17 LCD Specialized

I tried to reload 03 Micro Memory card drivers, but that did not work.

Does someone know which of these drivers may be for the card reader?

    Hi Slimpower...

I bought a couple of extra hard drives for the m6600 and I have installed Iinux mint 17.2, cinnamon flavor on the second drive. I have been tinkering with it for a couple of years. It is not a dual boot thing, but I can boot on the second drive when I want to. Linux mint seems to be working fine with the m6600 and in fact boots up and shuts down much quicker that Windows 10.

So if Windows 10 gives me any trouble, it will be Windows in the rear view mirror!

I just can't get the right video drivers for my m6600
I have the Nvidia Quadro 3000m drivers all set up, but the intel graphics won't come up and now.
any advice for getting win 10 running smooth on the m6600?

Quick query - would be grateful if someone could advise.

Would Quad i7 M6600 work without their MXM card? (e.g. I presume it would power the internal display, though VGA and HDMI ports would not work?)

Also would M6600 support AMD 5870M by any chance? (both are MXM 3B - but I'm not sure what's supported and what's not).

    Would be much appreciated!
