The cooling is not significantly different. There is a bit more space in the M6600 obviously but they have the same general cooling layout with heatsinks for the CPU and GPU connected to heatsinks at the two back exhaust ports by copper heat pipes. The fans used and their behavior is pretty much the same.

On the M6700 (17"), there are actually two different CPU heatsinks available, the normal one with a single copper pipe coming off of the CPU and another one with two copper pipes that you got if you purchased the machine with an "extreme" CPU. Not sure if this was also the case with the M6600 (rather sure it is not the case for the 15" models) but it might be worth checking out, as the extra heat pipe can knock a few degrees off of the CPU temperature.

Hi, I have M6600 with 2920XM, cooling CPU is good, but when you enable Turbo Boost temperature reaches 93 degree. Without Turbo Boost is max 83 degree. I used Coollaboratory Liquid Ultra, but i do not recomend this paste, because it is metal and motherboard died after dropping paste on MB after transffering Notebook in bag. I use AC MX-4 and this is the best paste. I recommend use 2 heatpipe heatsing on CPU. About GPU i have AMD M6100 with Coollaboratory Liquid Ultra and i have not problem about 6 months and teperature reach max 82-83 in Witcher 3.

    Hey guys,

I'm thinking of getting a Dell M6600 used. Since this is a very old laptop now, I was wondering how expensive some of the part replacements cost me?

    eg.

    1. what is the best gpu I can get for it?

    2. What would be the cost of a replacement motherboard?

    3. How much would a replacement LCD cost?

EDIT: As well as replacement fans which I think I will definitely need.

This is 2016 but I'm doing fine with a lenovo w520 as well. But would appreciate moving up to a 17 inch machine (primarily video editing)

Well M6600 is one of the best mobile workstation.
    1. Best GPU is K5000 but for price is M6100 from AMD. For me it was 220 dolars.
    2. Motherboard is about 100-150 dolars.
    3. For me it was 100 dolars for 1080p display.

I have notebook for 2 years now but it was used. Fans are in good condition and no problem with them :)

Thanks for the quick reply. This makes it a really tempting machine. The one I'm getting has a quadro 3000m. Even if it lasts me a few months I can get good mileage out of it. With the new mobile pascal cards coming out, would it be possible to put them in this machine? I would be even more happy with with AMD polaris/vega mobile parts if I can get that with the proper brackets with this. A gaming gpu might be a lot of fun in this machine.

A couple more things, how much hard drives can this machine pack in it? I have 3 (240 gb msata, 1 x 500gb and 1 x 640gb gb hdd) in my W520 at the moment. It would be awesome if I could RAID0 2 HDD's in this machine.

And can its optical drive be removed and a harddrive be used in it instead? I did this with the W520.

    Thanks again.

    Hi,
No it is not possible to chage gpu the best is K5000m or M6100
Yes you can use 4 hdd 1x msata 2x onboard slot and you can buy hdd ultrabay on ebay.
I have 540GB SSD for system and 1TB for data.
And max RAM for i7 is 32GB, you must have quad core CPU
But with AMD you cannot use power safe mode like Optimus.

Not sure why the M6700 is a bit more upgrade friendly for the GPU (if you happen across one of those for purchase). We have people here successfully using the GeForce 980M and also the Quadro M5000M (Maxwell-based GPUs) in the M6700. Still waiting to see what the situation will be for Pascal GPUs.

Hi, no it will not be possible to use Pascal. This is marketing. M6600 is 5 years Old notebook and they need sell new notebooky.
That is my opinion. I read many forums About this problem but no solution like unlock BIOS for control fan. Maybe you can test Alienware M17X R2 or R3.
