Can someone tell me which drivers on the Dell website are needed for the IEEE 1394 host controller for the m6600?

    Thank you!

Thanks for those detailed responses. I will keep an eye out for the M6700 as it would be nice to be able to upgrade to those GPU's especially with pascal just coming out. Though I believe I read on these forums or some other forums that they are changing the MXM slot compatibility for pascal. Will post link if I can find it.

1070 and 1080 will not work --- the cards are too big and require an extra power connector. I haven't been able to find any information on the 1060 card specifically, but the power requirement is small enough that it could work with a regular MXM slot. There will also be a set of mobile Quadro cards available once Kaby Lake machines start appearing.

I read something to that tune as well. I've become a huge fan of these workstation class machines with Quadros and multiple storage drive options. Not only are they very well built and usually work without issues, but the ability have a mobile workstation has been very useful for me.

I will hold out for a decent M6700. A person is selling one locally for $780 (negotiable slightly) vs $450 (negotiable) for the M6600. If I can haggle the M6700 down to $500 (i7 3720qm, 16 gb ram, k3000m, 1080p) is that a reasonable price?

After skimming previous posts, it appears that the best NVidia cards for the M6600 would be either a K5000M or a 680M. Does anyone know if this because of a true architectural problem, or is it just a case of a BIOS whitelist? Would modding the BIOS allow for more modern GPUs to be added?

The BIOS doesn't have an explicit whitelist. I'm not sure why newer cards do not work, and it may be separate issue with the BIOS, but on the Dell Precision machines there is no whitelist for the MXM GPUs.

This spring I purchased a new Dell Inspiron laptop that came pre-installed with Windows 10. I also have two m6600 workstations that have been upgraded from Windows 7 to Windows 10.

I have noticed that the updates for the Inspiron that came pre-installed with Windows 10 are much different than the updates for the m6600 machines that were upgraded.

One of the updates for the pre-installed 10 included changes in the start menu and appeared to be a major update for Windows 10. However that update never occurred on the upgraded Windows 10 machines.

Wondering if anyone else has noticed this, and I wonder what it means.

This would be the Windows 10 Anniversary Update. You can tell if you have it installed by going to File -> Help -> About Windows in File Explorer, and looking at the Windows 10 version --- the anniversary update is listed as version 1607. (The version number indicates the year and month of release, the prior version was 1511.)

The update is rolling out slowly to existing users so you might not see it on existing machines right away. If you want to kick it off on existing machines, you can use the tool here. https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10/ (Or just wait, you'll get it from Windows Update eventually.)

Also, if your non-upgraded machines are on a domain with updates managed by WSUS or SCCM, you might never see the update if your IT department does not push it. You should ask them about it I guess.

Thank you! Sure enough the pre-installed Windows is version 1607 and the upgraded version is 1511. And thanks for the link.

Now if only I could get the card reader to work on one of the m6600s. It works on one but not the other after the Windows 10 upgrade. Not sure I want to reinstall all the Windows 7 drivers, but can not figure out which of the 15 or so drivers on the m6600 list would be specifically for the card reader.

I really would not advise upgrading to the Windows 10 Anniversary Update on the M6600. I have been on Windows 10 for a long time and last weekend decided to run the Anniversary Update and it caused all sorts of problems. Mouse would not work, kept freezing and BSOD. I had to go back to where I was before the update and that is where I plan to stay until they have fixed the Windows 10 Anniversary Update issues, which are quite common. Not everyone is affected but, many are.
