Thanks for reply but I still want to give it a shot anyway. Could you upload the working vbios of your card? Did you use atiflash?

Installs but no fingerprint option in Sign In Options. In your device manager, do you have a Biometric Devices subsection? I see ControlVault Drivers -> Dell ControlVault w/ Fingerprint Sensor. But in older Win 8.1/7 there was a Biometric Devices section, I don't know if Win10 got rid of it.

Yes, there should be a "Biometric devices" category with the fingerprint reader inside, *in addition to* the ControlVault Device category that you are seeing. (At least that is how it is on both my M6700 and 7510, with Windows 10.)
Not sure what else to suggest...

I feel like my m8900 graphics are really showing its age and cannot really keep up with modern games, especially after AMD recklessly ended the support for non gcn cards (Nvidia still provide driver support for Fermi cards though)

I'm considering upgrading the graphics and I have options like m6100 and HD 7970m from AMD side and Quadro 4000m, k4000m and k5000m from Nvidia side. Is it possible to upgrade to Nvidia card? Or do I have to stick with AMD?

    Thanks for inputs!

This is actually false, the only thing that changes when you update drivers is the version, actual updates that are relevant to Fermi havent been around for some time now.

You can upgrade to either side, just make sure someone else has tried it already and/or heatsink compatibility. 7970m is around 965m I think so its still good for gaming for the most part.

According to notebookcheck.net, the M6100 is slightly faster than the K5000m for what it's worth. I bought a used M6600 with the M6100 and its been great.

The only difference is you can get 4gb GPU RAM on the k5000m whereas the M6100 only has 2gb. These are basically low/mid level GPUs when you compare them to desktop cards and the m6600 doesn't have a 1440p display anyway so your stuck at 1080p gaming. You will be hard pressed to find any game that needs more than 2gb for textures, images etc at 1080p. Maybe a game like Crysis 3 at max detail, full AA, and AF will do a bit over 2gb but your GPU wouldn't handle that anyway.

Thanks for the reply. I'm right now lock down to two: k4000m and firepro m6100. They all got their advantage and disadvantages imo but I still need some advice to made up my mind. The m6100 is sold for USD 175 and the k4000m for 200. My laptop has a ATI card so I would think upgrade to m6100 will face less problems on compatibility. Meanwhile k4000m has more ROPs and TMUs and twice the video memory. Axiom has a point on video memory but big video memory benefits higher texture while keeping the fps if raw performance hold equal. Besides k4000m equals to a lower clocked GTX 660 and m6100 is a firepro rebrand of a HD 7790. Nvidia cards tend to be more optimized for gaming. I'm more leaning towards k4000m if someone can confirm it works well.

Thanks for all the replies I really appreciate all the inputs.

I finally got my fingerprint reader to work under Windows 10 the other day. I followed a post from the discussion here: http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/laptop/f/3518/t/19640603
"Use the Control Vault driver app for Window 8, but DONOT install the software. There is a pick box when you run the installer . Choose to only install the driver and middleware."

Downloaded the Windows 8 64-bit driver from here: http://www.dell.com/support/home/us...duct/precision-m6600/drivers/advanced?os=w864
I believe I chose the first two options in the custom selection section of the installer about what components to install (in a section with three checkboxes)

During installation I was informed that my fingerprint reader needed a firmware update to version 23.xxx, so I downloaded that too and updated the firmware successfully. After that, it's worked great, and I'm able to use the fingerprint to log in.

One note of caution, I'm not sure whether it was necessary to install the driver first before flashing the firmware. Previously I had had some difficulty flashing the firmware when trying the M6700 Control Vault drivers (system would freeze halfway through flashing). This order of installation is something I just happened to try this time, and it worked for me.

Hello guys - going to have a weekend project of upgrading a M6600 i5 (dual core), to i7 2nd gen quad (2630QM). Thought to ask - would 2630qm support 32GB RAM? (read up on this apparently only 8GB is accessible via dual channel, not sure what that means?

Also do the heatsink / pipes from i5 M6600 (35W) provide enough cooling for 45W processor?

dual core is limited to 16GB

Quad Core supports 32GB but you will be at 1333mhz

As for the heatsink, I havent tried that before so I couldnt say with any amount of certainty
