M6600 Owners Thread

With 32GB of fast ram I can turn off the virtual memory.

 

I found a 1 terabyte hard drive at 7200rpm that is only 9.5mm in height so it should fit the m6600. I had thought the max capacity was 750GB at that height. A good price at $64.99. I think I will order this if you think it will definitely fit in the drive bays.
About the DVD/CD drive bay, Is the maximum height for a hard drive caddy also 9.5mm?

They make drives up to 2 TB at 9.5 mm now. (I have one in both my M6700 and M4800 -- this model.) The max for 7200rpm is currently 1 TB as far as I know. I use the drive for working space and bulk storage (programs run off SSD) so speed is not important.

The CD/DVD drive bay can also accept a 9.5mm drive, but if you are buying a third-party caddy, make sure it specifically supports 9.5mm, some of them are designed to take only smaller drives.

I might have to get that drive instead. How do you like the drive so far? i like the low heat and low power usage compared to a faster drive.

 

In my M6700 I've had it for almost a year. Absolutely no complaints... it does its job fine. Not super fast but completely adequate for general file storage which is what I need.

In my M4800 I've had it for maybe 2 or 3 months. This one works fine too but this one periodically makes a strange noise. It's not a clicky noise that would make me worried that the drive is about to die, but a noise that sounds like maybe the heads are spinning up or down. It could be the drive waking up from a low power state. Anyway I only hear it once or twice a day and otherwise it hasn't given me any trouble so I'm fine with it.

 

When I still had a spinning drive in my M4800, I'd hear the head park due to inactivity from time to time - that could maybe be what you're hearing?

 

Could be, I just think its strange that I hear it on one machine but not the other when using the same model drive. Both of them spend a fair amount of time with that drive idle.

 

Maybe check the power settings?

 

Just started setting up my retired m6600 as a htpc for my parent. I removed the m6100 and run it with the intel HD and now I realize what people meant it have the most annoying fan behavior ever, it toggle on at 70ish then off immediately at 50ish which is few sec.

I toke these step to make it almost never turn fan on in daily activity.

disable hyperthread

Any Idea how I can bridge the cpu heatpipe to gpu heatpipe so it is one gigantic passive heatsink?

 

I have one (actually taken from the external Seagate Backup Plus, but it's the same model) in my M6700 and the drive goes idle when not in use so when I access it via the Windows Explorer, it takes about two seconds for it to spin up and you can hear it (I don't hear it spin down).

Also have a pair of 750 GB WD Scorpio Black's in RAID 0 and they don't spin down.
