M6600 Owners Thread

I had a RAID 2 before PLUS a mSATA disk. While RAID was great i didnt think it was necessary. When my SSD disk died I decided to just run it without RAID.
Currently I have 2 SSDs (not on raid) plus a mSATA disk.

note mSATA port is slow so any cheap card should do it.

I use a RAM disk for some software scratch files. Reason why 32Gb does help: RAM is much faster than disk and increase the life of the disk (less write operations)

Forgot to mention: you cant put the mSATA in RAID. and even if you could it would not be worth as it is slow (SATA II). you can still do RAID 0/1 using 2 SSDs

I have a m6600 arriving this Friday with an i5 and 4gb ram. I want to upgrade to 32gb ram running at the fastest speed. Do I need the 1.35 volt or the 1.5 volt 8GB 204-Pin DDR3 SO-DIMM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) modules.
Do I need low profile memory?
How does this memory look for example? Great price.

You need the 1.5V DDR3, you should able to get 16gb around 50ish.

 

You also need an i7 to make use of all four memory slots

 

And a Quad-Core i7 at that. The Dual Core i7's only support 2 memory slots.

That said, is the memory that jimbo007 looking at compatible with the M6600? I am considering upgrading my i7 from 8GB.

Also, on a completely unrelated note... my M6600 came with an old-style spindle drive. I want to install an SSD in the 2nd drive bay (not mSATA), and use the RAID 0 mirroring to populate the SSD from the HDD, then revert from RAID and re-format the HDD for extra storage.

Is this possible? How can I do it? The RAID controls are somewhat obtuse, and I don't even see the SSD (which I formatted to test things out) when I use the non-RAID mode in the BIOS.

It's possibly, but skip the RAID 0 mirroring part. Just use something like Macrium reflect free to image the old drive to the new one.

 

I haven't tried this but I believe setting up *any* RAID array will effectively delete any existing data on the drive. There are bootable tools out there for cloning one drive to another, in fact it's pretty normal for an SSD to come with one in the form of a bootable CD. (I use Acronis True Image for this but it is not free, pretty sure you can find free ones these days.)

I'm ready to order an 8GB memory module for my m6600 and want to be sure it is the right one. I don't think I need the Low Profile modules and I need the 1.5v. This Kingston memory is pretty cheap right now at only $32.99.
What do you think? I want 4 sticks for 32GB running at full speed @1600mhz.
