Wired, I'd absolutely keep it. Are you shooting to be in the art, design or coding dpt for game dev? I would have gotten a Quadro card, b/c a lot of tools we use take advantage of them. The only thing you're getting out of the ATI is more of a gaming oriented card. Are you a Maya or Max user?

If I were you, I'd trash that ram you bought and put 16gb of the same type of ram in there, and get an SSD. I'm assuming it's two sticks of 2gb?

As far as replacing the GPU, the 6600 uses the B-type MXM cards, so your options are more open(4600 uses the A-type, that aren't as powerful). Where you're actually to find them is another matter.

Thanks for the response. At the moment I am just messing around with different programs. If I go further into game development I wanted to know if an upgrade was possible or maybe a new purchase after optometry school. As I said before it is something I do in my free time or as a hobby. Essentially becoming a possible second job. ;)

As for the upgrading, it will be done later after my warranty expires and the price of the cards decreases (you can find them online at oem retail locations online).

The ssd and ram is a no-brainer and will change once I have procured the funds. I am wondering though, would it be ok to keep the 4gb ram in the system and add 8gb of hyperx? (also the upgrade was free so no harm done)

Now I have two questions; what ssd would you choose (intel or crucial)? And what is the largest 7200rpm hdd that would fit in this system (2nd drive bay).

Thanks again, also if I sound a bit simple in terms it is the way I speak and feel free to go into any and all detail.

Ahh, well I work in film and have a lot of friends that are designers. There is also cross-over between the fields. It's not easy to break into. You need to know the whole pipeline. Buuuut, if you did know Unity you could find work with browser/ipad games. There's more money in that anyway.

I never mismatch ram. I'd throw it in a box and just put the hyperx in... that's what I'm going to do when it finally gets here =D

Mxm-upgrade.com is the only site I know of, and his selection is slim. Who knows if he'll be around in a few years.

I've only used OCZ drives, with no issues. The new SATAIII ones are a bit sketch atm. Intel is always a safe bet. Samsung has a 1tb 8mb cache 5400rpm spinpoint m8 9.5mm drive that fits into laptops. Used to be 750gb was the biggest.

It actually happen I had to complain to them about completely different thing. I cannot get in contact with my rep. I wanted to make sure that my keyboard is a backlit, and told them to modify slightly the delivery address, as I am not collecting it in persona. It was ok before re-creating the order. My sales rep told me he will check it and communictaion broke down from that moment. I complained to his supervisor yesterday. Did not get the answer to my qeustions or any reply whatsoever. Instead, noticed that the status of my order looks this way now:
    Order Status: Shipped
    Shipping Method: 7 Day Delivery
    Estimated Delivery Date: 7/12/2011 (updated)
EDIT: Forgot to mention that my estimated delivery date was 7/26/2011

Hmmm... not exactly what I was expecting. It really isn't easy to get to them once you already ordered.

That depends on the rep. Mine was very helpful after the purchase and kept me up to date whenever the order status changed.

    Thanks Jonas.
That only proves I was right to complain. Pitty, it doesn't work as there is no response from the supervisor, as well.

I highly recommend the Western Digital Scorpio Black 750GB (WD7500BPKT). In my opinion, the best laptop hard drive on the market. I think NotebookReview did a review of it a few months ago. If you search, you should be able to find it somewhere on this site.

You may also want to try the new Samsung Spinpoint M8 1TB. It is the first and so far only 9.5mm (the "standard laptop size) 1TB laptop drive available. Although the performance specs are less than that of the Scorpion Black and I personally prefer Western Digital over Seagate (Seagate recently bought Samsung's hard drive business), if you want the approximately 250GB greater storage of 1TB over 750GB, it may be worth it to you. Moreover, I am finding the Samsung Spinpoint M8 1TB online for less than the Western Digital Scorpio Black 750GB. Despite what I wrote above, I may even get one for my M6600 (expected delivery, 28 July 2011) instead of the Scorpion Black.

    Hope this helps.

Yes there should be no problem. As long as your machine POSTs and passes several rounds of memtest.
