I AM ABOUT TO FINALLY BUY A M6600!

I need a current owner(s) to answer just a few questions to ensure that I get the best system with the least issues the first time. I am taking the system back to Afghanistan, and won't have a lot of time to send back, wait, send back again, etc. I will be using the workstation for the Geospatial Intelligence Graduate program at Penn State, and will install software such as ArcGIS, Matlab, Erdas Imagine, and possibly Photoshop and a few new games such as Batman Arkham City and Elder Scrolls Skyrim.

    1) I want the 1920x1080 non-IPS screen. What model/brand display to I need to demand when ordering?
    2) I have an OCZ Vertex 3 Max IOPS SATA-III SSD. What, if anything, do I need from Dell to perform a fresh install on my drive?
    3) What else do I need to ask for/about when ordering?
    4) Please review my system below and make any recommended changes (without drastically increasing the price).

    My Desired Specs:
    • i7-2760QM
    • Windows® 7 Professional
    • Resource DVD - Contains Drivers
    • Recovery Media for Cyberlink PowerDVD™ & Roxio Starter, DVD Play/Burn
    • Recovery Media for Genuine Windows® 7 Professional,64bit,Multiple Language
    • 8X DVD+/-RW Slot Load w/Roxio and Cyberlink PowerDVD™, no media
    • 3 Year Basic Hardware Service with 3 Year NBD Limited Onsite Service After Remote Diagnosis
    • 2.0GB, DDR3-1333MHz SDRAM, 1 DIMM
    • AMD® FirePro® M8900 Mobility Pro Graphics with 2GB GDDR5
    • 17.3" UltraSharp™ FHD(1920x1080) Wide View Anti-Glare LED-backlit with Premium Panel Guarantee
    • 500GB 7200rpm Hard Drive
    • Intel® Centrino® Ultimate-N 6300 802.11a/b/g/n Half Mini Card
    • Dell Wireless® 375 Bluetooth Module
    • Light Sensitive Webcam and Noise Cancelling Digital Array Mic
    • Internal Swipe Fingerprint Reader and Contactless Smartcard Reader
    • Intel vPro™ Technology’s Advanced Management Features

    Hi guys,

Seems like the chip set driver for M6600 is dead on Dell's website:

Drivers and Downloads | Dell [United States]

I'm stuck. I just reinstalled the OS and since I couldnt download that driver, I skipped it. Probably not a good idea.

Now Im missing the fingerprint reader driver as well.

    Any idea ??

Chipset driver is one that is most important for most of the base system devices.

It is also something you should always "start with" when you're installing drivers.

Overall, enjoy the laptop! This thing has awesome build quality, people always admire the classy business look and solid build. I'd spring for the IPS RGBLED screen, but it will cost an arm and a leg to upgrade as you will have to spring for the Quadro 4000m as well(3000m doesn't cut it for gaming).

    1) Thanks for the info on the screen. I will have to read back to see how to ID the screen model.

    2) Does the Dell recovery media creator work with a smaller SSD? If not, how do I get the install CD for Win 7 Professional?

    3) I will deff ask about the discounts!

Overall, I am excited! I have looked at every possible laptop, and this is the best for college and gaming. I CANNOT WAIT!

    1. The screen info can be found by using this:
    HWiNFO64 Download

    2. If you are a University student, you can get Windows 7 Pro for free from the school as long as you are in the school. Fresh install always works best.

    3. You might want to consider refurbished ones? They have some hefty discounts that cannot be rivaled with buying new + discounts. I myself got mine when there was a coupon around and from the outlet, it was significantly less. If you want the details PM me and I could tell you via PM.

...about issue with screen described by me few posts earlier. I observe exactly the same effect like on this video (video not created by me or my friends, just found after googling): Dell U2412M LED Backlight flickering - YouTube.

Does it happen with your M6600 too ? Any (even non free) solution for this ?

I'm thinking right now - why Dell can't add in BIOS slider for setting backlight frequency ?

Thanks Ryan :D now I only have 1 unknown device left, which must be the fingerprint reader. Can you give me the link to the driver ?

    Many thanks.

No, I Dont think it is the fingerprint reader.
I guess your unknown device is the card reader.
It is the O2Micro card reader:
