I have tried various cards in the M6600 including the M8900, the 3000M, and the current 4000M. The AMD card is simply a beast with higher raw video performance than any of the current NVIDIA options (with the exception of the 5010M that is only about 1-2% faster on paper). Regardless, the 4000M is more valuable to me during my use in many of my business applications like the ones you mention due to the CUDA specific enhancements supported and the option to take advantage of the Optimus feature when only casual use is needed. The 5010M is a VERY nice card as well with its additional features, but in my opinion is not worth the current premium in price for maybe a 10% real world improvement over the 4000M. I would wait and upgrade the GPU card later when prices come down since the M6600 will allow this option.

In regards to the fan, the 5010M should not run noticeably hotter than the 4000M or M8900 and the fan cooling on this system is very robust yet on the more quiet side so all is fine there.

Good luck in any decision you make.

Optimus is something you can use with the nVidia cards, though.

Don't overlook it, it provides a significant amount of battery life boost..

Just thought I would throw it out there.. :D

It got many upgrades.. I got another refurbished model, but came with the 3000m.

After asking why I got a downgrade and if I could get my 4000m back at the cost of the CPU, RAM, HDD upgrades, he simply told me they would upgrade mine for the 4000m... :D

But I got a good deal on the M4600, I'll have to see which one I prefer and decide to keep..

Hey guys, i have a m6600 for a month almost, really happy with it, my first choice was a alienware wich i had before this ( m15x area 51 )
The thing is i bought it as a desktop replacement, the bad thing is the card is more for cad and other rendering progs that need to be stable.
I flashed my card to a 6970m but i dont have much of control of the videocard as 6970m and m8900.
I want to know if someone has tested this and i know other way arround they tested it 6970m to a m8900 :) , and i need a vbios of the 6970m.
    * this because i want to try a different one in the hope that it wil be better*

I play bf3 on my laptop wich is pretty amazing working but i have the issue with crashes, on m8900 it crashes within 2 mins gameplay till 10 max
and with the 6970m its like randomly but you can enjoy a bit of it :)

Tonight i will try x64 os aswell maybe that will help.

If you look closely at the calibrated profiles for RGB IPS Laptop Panels(Particularly Greyscale %,Calibrated RGB curves/255 ) , none of them would give you maximum delta-E < 1.2, which is the exact result you would obtain from NEC PA series as well as EIZO CG series.

A solid professional monitor solution should offer calibrated grayscale of 250-255 out of 255, but current wide gamut IPS panel solutions hardly can reach that level even with spectrometer, not to mention that backlight control as well as RGB uniformity should be included for that premium price. On the account of the actual BOM cost of each 17.3 inch A-TW IPS Panel only cost HP/DELL less than 70-80 USD, i would say that the current best available solution is to find the good reference external monitor instead for 750-1000 USD.

Test HP EliteBook 8740w Mobile Workstation - Notebookcheck.com Tests

ridiculous performance on the premium price is disappointing.

Got a IPS Dilemma that I need help with.

I've currently got a M6600 with a 1920x1080 17.3" WLED display and are very happy with it. I'm in the process of buying another two M6600's with 1920x1080 17.3" screens, but can't decide on whether to get the IPS Screen or not. Price isn't an issue, and ordinarily I'd just get the IPS without question, however to get IPS you have to sacrifice NVidia Optimus (won't work with IPS), as well as using a WWAN (which are not supported with IPS screen).

I've done my own testing with Optimus on and off, and with it on I get 5.5 hours battery doing light work, with it off I get 3 hours, that's a huge difference. Battery life for the end user will be of mild-moderate importance (generally just used it plugged in). Not able to have WWAN is an inconvenience but can connect a usb device for that, but would be nice to have it. The laptops will be used for business applications (not graphics) so color reproduction quality isn't a real issue. I would consider screen clarity and ease on eyes as a major consideration.

So my Dilemma, do I get IPS or not, the question is whether IPS will be (presumable) that much better than WLED (which I consider very good on the M6600's).

Any thoughts...it would be great if someone has seen both screen types on the M6600 and could comment?
    Thanks in advance.

Just bought M6600. I got refurbished one without backlit keyboard. Do anyone know if I can just swap keyboards to backlit one or you need support from some other hardware to make it lit?
