    Hi All,

I have been following this thread for awhile now, but this is my first post. I am convinced that this is the computer for me. I work on cs5 mainly, (premiere, after effects, photoshop ) but had a few questions. My budget is around $5000. I wanted to know the better 'value' between the 920 or 820 processor or the 4000m vs 5010m (cuda for premiere) as getting the 920 processor and the 5010m is more than I want to spend. Or springing for more ram instead (planning on 8 gigs or ram). Any suggestions would be appreciated, thank you.

I don't know enough about your workload to say, but I'd suggest the Quadro 5010M over the upgraded processor.

You might also consider more RAM, but buying that aftermarket is probably a better idea. 16GB RAM will run you < $250.

Get the 2920xm. On paper it is 2.5ghz, but it always runs at 3.0 to 3.2 no matter what. It is very fast at encoding video.

Get the nvidia quadro 4000m or 5010m for the video card. The 3000m is ok, but not great.

Between the two, the get the CPU. Adobe cuda accelaration is still hit or miss for the GPU. If Adobe were serious they would have put GPU acceleration in without having to buy a 3rd party piece of software. They didn't. And whats worse, the new gen of CPUs is very fast at encoding.

Adobe is Adobe. What the user needs comes second to what Adobe needs to fix the bottom line. Get the better CPU. Talk the budget people into also getting the 5010m. Tell them maybe next year Adobe will come through for you.

Of course the 5010M is going to be the better GPU but as it is brand new to the M6600 it is also a lot more expensive than the 4000M. One advantage of the M6600 is that the GPU can be upgraded later when, for example, the 5010M becomes more affordable.

As has already been said, 16GB of RAM is very reasonably priced these days, but as Bokeh said the XM CPU may be a better investment if you do not want to wait for IVY Bridge which should be out in Q1 2012.

Great thank you msjgriffiths, bokeh (great review by the way!) and slimpower for the information...have to call Dell here soon and see how much they deal on the phone compared to the website.

Just for info... I was able to get a good 15% off the website price with a bit and pushing over the phone with a business account manager. Even with this I'm still considering a reseller with some refurb machines which are about half the price of the full website price.

It is not even partial fan control.
Today I installed newest software version of controlpoint and built a new power plan and used the already installed "Quiet" power plan. But there were no differences between "Quiet" "Balanced" and my self created power plan. The CPU fan starts too early at about 45°C and only stops under 40°C which lasts very very very long although there is no CPU load. That will be much better if I could manipulate the fan speeds with a special software. :(
