22nm IVY looks good for lower heat and longer battery life. However Win 8 is expected next Fall which is a year away and possibly longer before Win 8/IVY systems start shipping, and then its always prudent to avoid new/new configurations for a couple of months (unless one has LOTS of spare time:).

I would double check that guarantee about the screen replacement

I cant believe they would offer a more expensive ips upgrade for free when it comes out cuz that doesnt make dollars and sense

Ian, if you read some of the other pages on this thread and others then you will see that the Chi Mei screen is not premium quality and Dell seem to be happy to replace them with AUO or LG screens. Plus, I seem to remember that Dell_Mano had said somewhere that they were no longer shipping Dells with the Chi Mei but that might only be in the US as there were a couple of people that received a M6600 in the past few days that did have Chi Mei.

According to some highly respected members of these forums, the IPS screen is rumoured to be coming out at the end of this month but that is just a rumour and I do not know what costs/price may be involved.

I agree that Windows 8 is less of a consideration, but if I were buying a new laptop now I would wait (if I could) until IVY Bridge comes out as it is not just about lower heat and longer battery, but can support more advanced technology such as 4k video and plenty of other things. It basically allows you to grow in a more sustained way than Sandy Bridge and should be out within the next 6 months. But like Ian has said, waiting may not be an option.

    Thanks for the advice :)

TBH I'm not banking on it, but at least it a bit of a bargaining tool :)

I use an external monitor 80% of the time and most of my work is CAD, so I couldn't really justify the extra an IPS panel would cost even if it were available now.

Thanks for the info :) Good to know that they consider swapping them if there is some concerns. As a matter of interest, how can you tell who the panel supplier is on the machine?... Is it in the BIOS, hardware config or is there a label somewhere?

I personally use HWiNFO64 which is a free tool (google it) and it tells you all you need to know about the machine including the screen etc.
