Or maybe they are not taking the shortcuts HP did. The M's have a ton of certifications for a lot of software.

    Hey guys,

I have now both panels in the M6600 next to me. What is a bit embarrassing is the fact that I am not able to take decent comparison pictures with my Nikon of the both screens. Always those lines in it. Dont know how to get rid of them.

Just so far this: The new panel (I think I have the LG) is way better than the ChiMei (well as expected). Though fairly said, the difference is not thaaat big. It shows me in two parts mostly:

1st: Colours are much more saturated and also clearer at the same time
2nd: White is really white and not grey!

Of course on such a machine a decent display is a must.

So if you tell me how to shoot proper pics I will do and post! Any other tests wanted, tell me.

    - Update -

Sorry I have been away for a while, but I have been busy;) . At any rate, I have an associate that placed a (57) unit M6600 order for his company and had a few left over for me to evaluate. These units are the same as the current "Ships Fast" 2720QM, AMD(ATI) M8900 configuration offered on the Dell web site right now for US$2279. The few I have looked at show a production date of late August. The good news is all the units I have tested have the AUO B173HW01 v.5 panel installed, which is MUCHO better than the CMO panel (which should no longer be in the M6600 system after mid September).

Additionally, I am currently working with him to buy these extra units he has in order to offer them to anyone who wants a good display system new in the box. The best news is if I can get them, the price will be more than $600 less per unit than the current price shown on the Dell web site! In other words, I will offer them for a flat $1600/ea + actual shipping

    I will keep everyone updated.

    Scott-

    Hi,

I've been looking for a couple of mobile workstations for CAD, Revit and structural analysis use. I had originally looked at the M4600, but I think the M6600 with the Quadro 4000m graphics and better flexibility will be the way to go.

A client cam into the office with his M6400 covet with t he edge to edge display and I was quite impressed by the look of it, however it seems there is no option for a similar spec on the new M6600. Does anyone know if this is coming or how the standard screen compares? I had thought about the touch screen, but I'm not sure if it's a bit of a gimmick tbh.

There also seems to be some discussion about the panel supplier (LG or ChiMei) Is it possible to specify which one you get? or what is the main difference?

I'm based in the UK and my current spec is as follows:

    i7 -2820QM
    8GB 1333mhz RAM (probably upgrade to 16 or 32GB in a year)
256GB serial ATA II SSD (Is there much benefit going to the ATA III?)
    Quadro 4000m
    17.3in Ultrasharp FHD (1920x1080) LED-backlit LCD Panel
Windows 7 Pro 64Bit (Is Windows 8 far away and is it worth waiting for?)
    Slot load DVD
.... all the other general stuff :)

Any help/ advice would be much appreciated.

    Ian

Ian, you can certainly tell your Dell liaison that you do not want the Chi Mei display on the M6600, even though I did read on these forums that Dell US at least had pulled them. Whether you do get it or not I doubt they can guarantee at purchase time and you should check immediately on delivery.

If you plan on upgrading your RAM then you may want to consider getting just the minimum from Dell - 4 GB 2x2GB - and then upgrading from there. That would be cheaper than paying Dell for 8GB 2x4GB and then upgrading.

The ATA III is faster than the ATA II. Again here many people recommend you to be smallest Dell HD option and then upgrade to an SSD yourself. Personally, I like to get the HD from Dell and buy a second SSD outside, but that is personaly preference.

I recently had to make a decision about a Dell computer. It was a bizarre and unexpected situation where I had to buy it now. If I had had the choice, I would definitely have waited until IVY Bridge comes out (possibly Q1 next year) and maybe even until Windows 8 was out, but the OS is of less importance to me than the CPU, and IVY Bridge is making some very attractive noises about how much better it may be than Sandy Bridge.

Wanting to help and being able to help as quickly as someone wants are two different things. I just logged in this morning and the first thing on my list of things to do (outside of my normal job) was to answer your PMs from yesterday. Managing an IT Dept, being a dad, and living a fairly full life means that some days don't slow down until its time to sleep.

Was not trying to ignore you. Wanted to help. My life is not as simple as yours, so it might take a day for me to get back to you.

Calling me out on the forums is something I take personally. I take it even more personally because you PM'd me a question and when I didn't answer it quickly enough for your liking, you didn't send another PM, you took a passive aggressive public shot at me. I don't work for Dell. I am not paid to provide support to people. I do my best to answer questions because I genuinely like helping people. The first 2 questions that you PM'd me in early August, I did answer. The question you asked me yesterday was more complex because you have a very rare machine config. A config that I won't talk about publicly because you sent that info to me privately - in a PM.

    Thanks for the advice. :)

I'd asked about reducing the RAM, but they've already given me a decent discount, so I don't think they want to give me the full price of the RAM off, but I'll try a bit harder.

I need to get it soon as I'm working on a 4.5 year old Sony Vaio SZ3 with a T7200 Core 2 duo and 2GB Ram :(

Is there much differences in the display? I've been told there won't be any upgrades offered soon, but again I'm not sure if they are just saying that to make me buy now, although the Dell guy has offered to replace them if a better screen comes out (confirmed in an email)

    Thanks again.

    Ian

Perhaps but I think they had every intention of releasing it at the end of September. I think there was some sort of set back. Maybe they are waiting until they get the BIOS issues resolved. Who knows... That said a little transparency on Dell's part would go a long way.
