Unlike consumer notebooks the Precision line of mobile workstations is a business machine with certified ISV applications and such. A certain amount of testing needs to take place before anything is added.

Hi. So the IPS will be an option?? After many fruitless calls to Dell I had to give up and order my M6600 for a project next month, and therefore had to forgo waiting for an IPS.

And if will be released, is it something that can be purchased and upgraded either in the field, or by being sent back to Dell? I'm a professional photographer and desire the highest quality color.

It is supposed to become available toward the end of September. I am also waiting for it to come out. I doubt it will be able to be added in the field but maybe.

That's not actually entirely correct. Intel only officially supports DDR3-1600 on the Sandy Bridge IMC. However. This particular RAM-be it through the use of an XMP profile or whatever-does, in fact, run at 1866MHz in most Sandy Bridge systems. It actually has a SPD listing for DDR3-2133 too, but I haven't found a way to get it to run at that speed.

    It's documented in CPU-Z...

...and it's reflected in the memory bandwidth numbers in Sandra:

The WEI isn't really a valid benchmark, I'm afraid. It's a neat little toy, but nothing more. Microsoft hasn't discussed (to my knowledge) what they're benchmarking to arrive at their results, nor have they discussed how they're weighting the various different pieces of data, and at the end of the day all they give you is a number without a scale or context attached to it. The WEI score is the functional equivalent of someone telling you that the volume of a fish tank is 26.2.

26.2 what? Gallons? Liters? Quarts? Cubic feet? KiloSioruses? PetaMoldCADs? Ijustfeltlikemakingupmyownmeasurementscalethatihaven'tactuallynamedyets?

You can get a general idea of how fast a machine is from it, but only in the broadest possible sense. The numbers themselves are really meaningless without some context to put them in.

Either way, the DDR3-1866 RAM does run at 1866MHz in these machines. It is marginally faster than the 1600MHz RAM, but the difference-while quantifiable with the right software-is likely to be too small in most normal circumstances to be easily noticed by a human.

If I can figure out the latest version of the Spyder software and I get some time this weekend to play with it, I will, yeah. :)

Just got my new Display. WOW, what a difference. LG Display is so much better my eyes don't hurt anymore.

Kudos to all the Dell folks who helped me, they jumped right on this and fixed the issue. I only got bounced overseas once, I hung up and called again.

I received my new M6600 back yesterday with the LG screen in place of the Chi Mei my last one had.

What a difference! The screen is bright and crisp and with a little adjustment the colors are coming out very nicely. The viewing angles are pretty great too. There is a bit of color shift around the +- 40 degree mark but still perfectly readable all the way around in almost the full 180 degree arc.

Very happy with my purchase now!

Absolutely agreed. What is most strange in both my and your WEI is the low numbers for Q4000m...

Oh, and BTW: is there a way in M6600 to change RAM timings (my CL is set to 11, same as in SPD - would like to try 10 or 9)?

Thanks, I'll own you one virtual MoldCADlager :)
