so where is the best place to locate the HD and SSD? I only want to do this once and would not need to take it out again.

I am on the verge of ordering but I am debating if I wait for IPS

Is there any confirmation that the touchscreen will NEVER be availible with IPS

I am also wondering if there is any solid confirmation that the touchscreen has not and will not come with the crappy CM panel

    The RAM is this stuff: Kingston HyperX 8GB (2 x 4GB) Model KHX1866C11S3P1K2/8G 1866MHz/CL11.

I don't have the machine with me at the moment but I'll post my WEI when I get a minute. I should point out, though, that the validity of the WEI benchmark is questionable at best, so if/when I get a chance I'll grab some numbers from something like SiSoft Sandra or AIDA64 too.

You do give up a bit of latency to good 1600MHz RAM (which is typically CL9) and in some applications that might be enough to tip the scales in favor of the slower memory. Other applications are going to be more sensitive to bandwidth than latency and those applications will benefit from the faster memory.

In the absolute best-case scenario, you could expect the 1866MHz RAM to get you about 17% better performance than the 1600MHz stuff, but I wouldn't expect the real-world difference to be that large. Indeed, these guys did an OK review of it and found that it was about 5-15% faster than 1333MHz RAM; I'd expect that those numbers would be about halved if it were compared to 1600MHz RAM.

What they did see, however, was a *massive* increase in 3D performance from the Intel IGP. This is unsurprising; memory bandwidth has been a problem with IGPs for years, and the HD3000 is actually, relatively speaking, a pretty respectably powerful GPU-its 3dmark 06 scores put it in the same ballpark as cards like the 9500GT, the 8600GTS and the 7900GT and GTX.

This is of interest to us (or to me, at least), even with the Quadro. If I can get a substantial performance bump from the IGP, I may be able to get away with tweaking the Optimus profile (or I could have, if it'd cooperate  ) to use the IGP with more programs than it would by default, which buys me more battery life and lower temps. :)

It is significantly less blue-tinged than it was. I just upgraded to v4 of the Syder 3 software and the UI is radically different from v3, and I haven't played around with it much yet. I just calibrated it with the default settings and a 6500k color temp.

I believe the profile will work irrespective of the GPU in the system, but I'm not certain of that. I'll see if I can dig it out of whatever folder it's buried in and upload it tonight or tomorrow.

And yeah, I wouldn't want to use duct tape either. I hate cleaning up the adhesive from that stuff. The painter's tape I used comes off cleanly though. :D

The machine ships with 4 screws holding the drive cage in place in addition to the one locking the quick release lever. Take a look at the picture on this page/a couple pages back, they're in the holes labeled with the (H) before the screw size. Remove those screws and the quick release lever will work properly. The drive itself is friction fit into the cage.

Bad video card or corrupt video driver, possibly (unlikely) a bad screen or cable.

MoldCAD, what did you use to adjust your color settings? Every time I try to bring up the Intel driver settings I get the error "GfxUI has stopped working". I've only seen the driver settings for the Intel graphics chip once after delivery then it stopped working. Everything else is working correctly.

Do you have info that the IPS screen will ever be available for the M6600 in the first place?

I just got this from my DELL rep in Sweden:
“Hi, RGB Panel on M6600 should be launched with all graphic cards from AMD and Nvidia. Unfortunately the launch was postponed from early September on beginning of October.”

    Same DELL rep previously said:
“Hi. When the IPS panel goes live than there will be just one additional panel to be available. The Multitouch will have the same Ultrasharp LCD as it has right now.”
“The IPS panel on the M6600 will come live on the 11.09.2011”

This DELL rep got the information from his sales support which is outside Sweden, don't know where.

I also have to say that after many year as a DELL customer i´m very satisfied with sales and support.

Did you update the driver to the latest version? I did, and it works OK.

I did the tuning in the "Color Enhancement" section...

Well, here's the WEI results with the 1866MHz RAM. Don't mind the video card memory size information; Windows does bizzarre things with memory management once you give it more than about 12GB.

And I've attached the color calibration file.

    Hi Siorus,

As to the WEI results, they are identical with my own:) Which I suspected, as the Huron River chipset supports up to 1600MHz front bus speed.

Thanks for the calibration file; will give it a try.

    Cheers

    Piotr
