No it is not the Slim standard BUT the Ultra Slim standard.
Slim has a housing of 12.5 mm and Ultra Slim 9.5 mm.
You cant replace your drive with a Slim drive.
The only replacement which can bee done is with an Ultra Slim drive.
    Be careful!

Yes, Ultra Slim with 9.5 mm. ;)

My M6600 audio (when connected to external speakers) is making clicking noises from time to time (e.g. when mail comes, before the usual gong there a crackling sound). Is this normal with this sound card?

Frankly, the "business class" laptop not having 5.1 audio, I was expecting the 2-channel sound system to be of higher quality :(

You do have 5.1 audio through the HDMI port.

I will crank up the volume on my speakers today and see if I hear anything from the headphone out.

Indeed - provided you have a means to amplify that signal properly for your surround system (very difficult to split from picture in the HDMI data stream, without expensive devices). So, if you have an amplifier with HDMI inputs, you're fine - but only for watching BD movies with 5.1 sound.

For routing 6 separate audio tracks from an NLE (such as Sony Vegas Pro I'm using) to my surround speaker system, in order to monitor my surround sound mix, the HDMI option is no good - I'm about to purchase a dedicated USB card for that. Do you know which is the best one?

    Hey MoldCAD,
It's amplifier in English, we use amplituner in Polish and I think couple more countries/languages from Old Continent use it as well :)

EDIT: haven't tested headphones output but HDMI sound is crystal pure.

    Yep mate - you're right :)

The term "amplituner" comes from the old days when home theater amplifiers were almost always integrated with radio tuners...

I have no means of monitoring the HDMI sound other than the crappy plasma loudspeakers (the 50" HDTV is hanging over my NLE editing suite).

For everyday use, I have the Headphones output of my dock connected to the Logitech amplifier, using just the 2 front channels. Interestingly, it sounds as the cracks are only generated by some external interference; when I use my MIDI keyboard with Ableton Suite, the produced sound is beautifully clean...

Here goes, guys. The Dell M6600 was shipped to me as a warranty replacement. Unusually for Dell, it is a BRAND NEW build, not a refurb. The specs are below, and the option of a 3 year warranty is available (my original warranty, which was for my M6400 and rolled over to this, ends in October).

    Specs are as follows:

    Dell M6600 Precision Mobile Workstation
    Processor: Intel® Core™ i7-2720QM (Quad Core 2.20GHz,6M cache)
    Graphics Card: NVIDIA® Quadro® 3000M with 2GB GDDR5
    Memory: 4.0GB, DDR3-1333MHz SDRAM, 2 DIMMS
    Screen: 17.3" UltraSharp™ FHD(1920x1080) Wide View Anti-Glare LED-backlit
OS: Windows 7 Professional, 64 bit
    HD: 320GB

I will throw in a FREE nearly unused Hitachi 7K500 HD as well(500gb/7200rpm).

The system is completely new - it was shipped to on 9/1/2011, and hasn't been used except to turn it on and verify system specs.

Here is the deal: $1900 shipped, USA only

I already have a buyer lined up at a slightly lower offer, so you have less than one week to snap this up.
