Dell has only offered the LG and AU panels until now. As far as I know. I can't see a reason not to be able to prove it.

Not to sound paranoid, but we have seen people employed by companies other than Dell post here. This goes back a couple of years with the Lenovo people on the M6500 thread. Sorry for doubting you, but screenshots would help.

Not you - I know you know your stuff :). You have much respect from me - need to add rep for you.

Was asking Robbitt80 about the Chi Mei display that he got. Seemed strange to me that it was not LG, AU, or Samsung.

Oh..OK, got it. No problem. :D

I agree; seeing a CMO in a business class system is rather odd. I noticed Dell putting them in the XPS 17 about 3 or 4 months ago. I received one in a non-3D L702x and it had 3 dead pixels. The matte surface was also so rough, it was like looking through fine sandpaper. There are people who like CMO and some of their screens are nice, but the N173HGE-L11 revision of that 17.3" panel leaves a lot to be desired. At least in my case...

I have another M6600 showing up from Dell on Monday and the dispaly panel will be the first item inspected. Hopefully, it will be another AUO v.5.

    Scott-

I am looking to purchase a M6600 hopefully towards the end of the month.

Is there an easy way to check the brand of display short of taking the system apart?

I can handle taking the bottom off the keyboard portion, but I am not too enthused about taking the entire display apart to verify manufacture origin unless I have to. I do want to be able to verify I have one of the better displays instead of this Che Mei brand.

If Dell is having issues meeting demand for the M6600 displays, maybe I should wait a while before ordering one.

I need it for school, but I am NOT willing to pay a premium price for consumer grade or worse display panels. My work will demand high quality visuals and I want this computer to last me till I graduate in two to three years.

That is why I am looking at a premium system instead of a consumer grade laptop.

you can use HWINFO32 to check the brand of the display. I think the Chi Mei panel is just a special case fluke. I have only seen LG and AUO on the M6600 myself so far and with the possible Samsung as well as a vendor.

Thanks for the info Star Forge. I can live with any of the latter 3, I have had LG and Samsung displays before, and from everyone else's opinions, the AUO displays sound comparable. Just have to see what I get.

I plan on ordering hopefully soon (within the next 30 to 45 days if some money frees up). Decided to go with the Nvidia 3000 card. The ATI seems to be running a little hotter than I am comfortable with for a long-term reliability machine.

I am surprised about AUO too because my current M6600 has it, while my incorrectly built and exchanged M6600 has a LG the AUO is actually not that bad for what it is worth, which means it is probably what Scott has pointed out to be the V.4, which is known to be one of the AUO's premium panels.

However, the LG I had had some flickering in low brightness problems and also a film stain in the lower half of the screen out of the box. This AUO is so far *knock on wood* flawless!

I run HWINFO32 on mine out of curiosity, and it shows my display to be the AU Optronics [Unknown Model: AUO159D]

So I guess, all is well?

Oh my god, I cant believe it!?
Do you really think I want to pull Dell into the dirt?
I spent a lot of money on my Dell Precision M6600 and I thought I would become a premium notebook.

I can prove that I have a Chi Mei display CMO1720 built in my M6600 and I will do it right now!
What I was trying to explain was that I cant prove that the Chi Mei is not a premium panel. I am neither a technician nor do I have to do with companies that sell notebooks or other eqipment. I am in the medical field and the M6600 is my private pleasure - respectively should be.

I also own a HP EliteBook 2540p with an AU Optronics display and this Display is much better than that of my M6600. If you wish pics from my HP too, I can do - no problem to deal with.

I want to know what my chances are on monday when I call Dell begging for replacement. Is it realistic or is it not?

Big pictures for you and anyone else in my case:
