I wasn't really talking about one specific vertical line within Dell, HP, Lenovo, et. al. I was more speaking to the industry and overall market share.

HP took over #1 from Dell (#2), who lead Lenovo, Apple, Acer, and the rest. Therefore as a whole, they can lower their prices to more competitive levels than the rest. Sure, Lenovo may be able to lower their prices for a time (read: Discounts), but the drop is not sustainable given their market share. It's typically a loss-leader to gain more market share, so that then they can get better economies of scale (fixed costs drop as a percentage of overall cost) and prices can be more competitive in the long term.

Again, you may find examples where the above isn't true, and again, congrats, make the purchase. The bottom line is, you'll got a good PC for a good price.

All I'm saying is, I know that if I'm patient, I'll also get a good deal on the M6400 that surpasses what I could buy a comparable Lenovo for. And that's because once early adopters are out of the pricing equation, Dell will "always" have the ability to offer a better deal, and so they will, to keep a market share advantage.

You could have purchased a W700 w/ the current coupon code for almost 20% off...

The M6400 is not going to be smaller/lighter than the W700, based on the brochure that's been going around... it looks like its going to be up to 1lb heavier than a comparably spec'd W700. Now, if that extra weight is warranted (more rugged, cooler, etc..) then maybe the tradeoff will be worth it.. but it could be a serious brick.

HP's pricing for corporate volume customers are pretty competitive too. Individual purchases like these aren't really in HP's horizons and the US market isn't exactly HP's strongest market. They are much more competitive outside the US. I can get a better configured HP business notebook than what Dell can offer. However, Lenovo's pricing are now even undercutting those of HP in Asia-Pacific markets. It looks like they are more vertically integrated than HP.

Yup, I was just pointing out that bigger market share does not mean lower prices in all segments.
I have noticed HP to be more competitive outside the US too, heck their 17" business laptop was cheaper in europe than in US, when normally its the other way round

Not sure what PDF's you're looking at, but this is not correct. The M6400 will be much smaller than the W700. I've been looking at both - I like the W700 but it seems a bit on the really large size, even for a 17"

    From the W700 brochure here:
    http://shop.lenovo.com/ISS_Static/merchandising/US/PDFs/W700_Datasheet.pdf

And the Dell M6400 brochure here:
    http://www.dell.com/downloads/global/products/precn/en/workstation_precision_m6400_brochure.pdf

    The W700 is 16.1 x 12.2 x 1.6" (410x310x41mm) starting at 8.3lbs (3.76kg)

    The M6400 is 15.4 x 11.2 x 1.35-1.5 (393x285.5x34.5-38.5mm) and starts at 8.54lbs (3.88kg)

That's also what I found. The m6400 is comparable to HPs 8730w, which is very decent... And to me, the weight is not as much of an issue as dimensions...

Considering the w700 is the only 17" workstation out right now that offers customization, the price is the price. Even with that (expired) discount, I feel that laptop is a bit overpriced...to say the least... I'm sure when HP offers customization for th 8730w, and Dell releases the m6400, prices will change...
