I doubt it, a motherboard swap is likely needed.

Just found out that when using Inventor it uses the CPU for rendering purposes. I've had to disable Optimus in the BIOS to get it to render using the dGPU. The settings in nVidia control panel are set to use the dGPU. Anyone got tips for fixing this? It's kind of a major hindrance ;)

EDIT: Just updated to driver 333.11 (or something) from Autodesk.com. Didn't work.

From what I gather, not only a motherboard swap, but likely a lid-assembly swap too, and who knows what else. FHD vs. QHD+ are basically two slightly different versions of M4800. See your packing slip. There are quite a few parts distinguished by display resolution.

When I got mine in July I was unable to get the fingerprint reader with the QHD+ screen despite trying on the phone to a person (not just on the site). I was able to get the i7-4910MQ before it was available on the web site, so I believe I'd have been able to get the fingerprint reader too if it were possible. It points (as stated above) to some pretty significant differences.
FWIW I think it's a brilliant machine and I'm also very happy with the battery life. It doesn't last all day - it's designed to work for a living - but I get longer than I did from my previous W520.

Hello, I just placed an order for a Dell M4800 and wanted to run it by you guys and get some feedback. I am replacing my Dell M6500 Covet. I do mostly CAD and some video/photo but usually Solidworks. I was trying hard to decide between the MSI WS60 and the M4800, I ruled out the M3800 because of the weak GPU. I think the MSI is a better laptop in terms of features but the Dell has better CPU/RAM performance. Anyway my delivery date is not till 10/7 so I have some time to change my mind ;)

I was able to get an additional 10% off my build going through a Dell Rep (Veteran/Student Discount). I did not get the QHD+ screen because I don't think solidworks will play nice with it, and I like the battery life when using optimus. Do you think this was a mistake?

Looks like a beefy spec, out of interest did you check how much the equivalent ZBook would cost?

Check the unit carefully when you get it, my one had some chassis damage out of the box.

Since you maxed your CPU, you might consider faster memory two.
M4800 can actually take 32 GB of 1866MHz memory, except, as reported in this forum, you have to install only sixteen at first, have BIOS recognize it, and then can you install the other pair.
You would squeeze out some extra performance…

Ordering full 32 GB from Dell would probably not be the best of ideas, as full 32 GB of 1866MHz is not officially supported.

Maybe you could alter your order to the cheapest mem config possible and go for premium aftermarket memory.

FWIW, I haven't had much trouble with SW on the QHD+ screen. I tend to usually use it while docked and with the lid closed, but haven't had too many issues. It's certainly usable.

I have seen some weirdness when SW is open while docked and I then un-dock and take the machine elsewhere. The software works fine, but it seems like SW (or the video driver) is still expecting the older smaller screen size, so I've noticed that when I click, the window shrinks to ~2/3 of the full screen for a split second. I find it annoying, but not deal-breaking, since I can just restart the program or the machine (nice and quick with an SSD), and I typically stay docked most of the day.
