I purchased the laptop off ebay but I believe it has a smartcard reader...and today with google I learned what that actually is. that must be it.

I believe I did uninstall the premiere color... in the event that I did, is there any other program that would create that behaviour?

The Window power plans do decrease brightness do decrease brightness on battery depending on settings, but not on a program to program basis. The only program I know of that does it on a program by program basis on the PRecisions is Premiercolor.

I'm thinking about getting a M4700 but one of the things holding me back is the need for an IPS panel for design work, which isn't offered anymore due to the tinting problems.

I noticed a few refurbished units started popping up on eBay with IPS panels such as this one: Dell M4700 3920XM K2000M 16 0Gb IPS RGB 1080p 512GB SSD Bluray Finger Pro CD0140 | eBay

Since this listed unit is a refurb from Dell, is it safe to assume the IPS panel has been replaced or checked so it doesn't have the tinting issues?

Otherwise does anyone know when Dell will start directly offering IPS panels again for the M4700?

I'm really considering the refurb path but hoped to find someone with a positive experience first.

    Thanks

No. We have zero reports of an IPS panels in the M4700 that do not have the tint issue. I'm rather sure that this applies to the M4600 too. While it's possible that you could be the first one, you should be very careful making your purchase. I'd find it hard to believe that they are selling refurbished units with good panels but not new ones.

You could swap out the B2 IPS panel in the stock Precision for a B6 panel, and obtain red-orange rather than pure orange. (Where's the wink emoticon?) If color gamut is your bag, you won't do better than a Dreamcolor 2 panel on an HP 8740w. There's always a few on fleabay, but $$$ for a machine that is 3 gens old. Of course, you can't find 2560x1600 in any current gen mobile workstation... much less a notebook. Nexus 10 as a slave display?

For reference I just purchased my laptop off ebay with it similarly named. Needless to say it did NOT come with the IPS display at all!

I am in the process of having the seller give me a partial refund because the panel isn't what they said it was...I went to I believe it was laptopscreen.com and purchased an upgraded screen there....and its beautiful.

    Thanks Aaron44126, maunakea, and octomobiki

So reading more and based on your comments, it seems replacing the panel with a 95% gamut one is the ideal solution.

Can you confirm if I purchase the standard 1366x768 I can replace it with B156HW01 V.4? Or do I need to go for the FHD model in case it has any different hardware to support 1080p? And does anyone have an instruction video showing the process, as I couldn't find any for M4700.

The only hardware difference in the M4700 relating to this is that the motherboard is different for IPS and non-IPS systems. If you are swapping between two non-IPS screens, you should be fine.

    Hi all,

I'll buy a laptop in less than a week, and I'm considering the Precision m4700. I have had no luck with haggling. How can I get a better deal than the sticker price? Also, does anyone have experience with recent Thinkpad W models?

    Thank you.

    Hey all.

Just scored an M4700 ;-) off eBay (3840QM, 256GB SSD, 16GB, K1000, 6 cell, backlit, webcam, etc.) and am looking for a lightweight travel adapter.

The 130W travel adapter sold by Dell says "lightweight" and yet reviews indicate that the thing weighs 1.5lbs, not exactly light.
    Dell 130 Watt 3 Prong AC Adapter with 6 ft Power Cord for Dell Precision M4700/ M6700 Mobile WorkStations / XPS 14 (L401X)/ 15 (L501X) Laptops : Laptop/Notebook Accessories | Dell - Public Sector

The stock 180W adapter weighs the same, no?

Anyway, if you know of a lighter 130W adapter made by a 3rd party manufacturer that will work on an M4700, let us know!

With 130W should be able to get max performance from CPU if I downclock the GPU (only need Nvidia card for Linux multi-monitor support) and slap a Crucial 250GB mSata in there (i.e. all SSD to reduce wattage/heat).
