With my K2000M, these steps greatly reduced fan cycling, most of which is driven by GPU temps. It won't eliminate the fan kicking in when it's actually needed, of course.

But has anyone tried attaching 1.5TB, 2TB, or 3TB (if there is) 2.5" hdd to the m4700?

I find it difficult to believe only 750GB is applicable to the latest machines.

    my specs:
    Dell Precision M4700/i7-3720QM QC CPU @ 2.6GHZ.
    14GB RAM
    K2000M
    1366x768(?)
    750GB

I looked all over in the NVIDIA control panel and could not find the option for "Change the Preferred Graphics Processor to Integrated Graphics," so I couldn't get this to work.

Here is what I got back from the Dell technician that worked on my machine:

Here is the official statement from NVidia:

GPU Runs at a High Performance Level (full clock speeds) in Multi-display Modes

This is a hardware limitation and not a software bug. Even when no 3D programs are
running, the driver will operate the GPU at a high performance level in order to
efficiently drive multiple displays. In the case of SLI or multi-GPU PCs, the second GPU
will always operate with full clock speeds; again, in order to efficiently drive multiple
displays. Today, all hardware from all GPU vendors have this limitation.

The problem with most of those drives is that they are thicker than 9.5mm. If the M4700 is like the M6700 you'll need a 9.5mm thick drive and there aren't many (if any) over 1TB out there. You could replace the optical drive by another HDD if you need more space and don't need the optical or put the OS and programs on a mSATA SSD to free up space on the hard drive.

The largest 2.5" drives available are 1 TB which work fine.

There are actually 1.5TB and 2TB drives but they are taller than the standard 9.5mm and do not fit in the M4700/M6700 (or most other laptops). 1TB is the largest 9.5mm drive at the moment.

    [Edit]
Tijo said the same thing just above but somehow I missed it. :p

Thank you. Is this the same problem with the video cards? Is K5000 too large for it to be upgraded with M4700?

Yes. The M4700 has a MXM 3.0 A slot and the K5000M is a MXM 3.0 B card (same interface but larger physical size). As far as I know, the best card you can put in the M4700 is the Quadro K2000M. However, you will have the option of upgrading once the next generation of cards is available.

I have a few more questions regarding my precision that I didn't see covered in this thread.

How do you stop the screen from auto-changing color/brightness? I thought I disabled it with the Dell program (forget which it was, did this a few days ago) - but when I started switching programs I noticed that the screen continues to auto-adjust itself. I'm going to use the computer for photography, I can't have the display changing like this.

There is a symbol on the palm-rest, it looks like a rounded off rectangle with 2 parenthesis around it...what does it stand for?

Did you order your precision with a smartcard reader?

You could try completely uninstalling the PremierColor software or disable it at startup, either should work for the screen brightness issue.
