That would be a pity, because it was a free upgrade for you.
I have two more things you can try out:
Use some Linux live-CD to see what it looks like in Linux.
If it looks ok there, it must be Vistas fault and it's not because of too strong colors.
Apply an AdobeRGB color profile to your monitor.
This will lessen the oversaturation of colors in general. You can get the Adobe RGB color profile directly from Adobe: http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/iccprofiles/icc_eula_win_end.html. First, copy the color profile files from the archive to "C:\Windows\System32\spool\drivers\color". Then, to apply the profile to your monitor, open the color management in Vista's control panel and change the profile of the monitor to "Adobe RGB (1998)"

Unfortunately, the problem may persist after the screen has been exchanged with a CCFL one if it's not a hardware problem :(. If the above tips don't bring up any results, I would call Dell and ask them what could cause the problem, and also explain to a technician what you already have tried out.

checho, do you have the option of installing Windows 7? I was also very displeased with the text quality on my M4400 RGB LED, until I installed Windows 7. I didn't do methodical testing to determine the reason for this, so I can't tell you why. All I know is that the text in XP and Vista was blurry, no matter what Cleartype and display settings/drivers I used. Windows 7 was perfect by default, though I did opt to use 125% DPI scaling to make the text a bit larger.

    Hello everybody,

After some days using the M4400 with WUXGA RGBLED Truelife display, I have to say:

    - The screen is really beautiful. Colours reproduction, contrast and images/text clarity are awesome.

    - The display is excessively bright!! You have to work with the brightness around 40-50% if you don't want to hurt your eyes! Perhaps you need sunglasses exceeding this percentage.

    - After watching other displays with Vista, I could conclude that all my problems with the fonts (colours around) were completely alien to the screen. Most of they are due to cleartype and specific Vista fonts. Furthermore, after configuring Vista with my desired fonts (type and size) all looked very, very nice :)

    - WUXGA maybe excessively for 15.4" in some situations. Certainly, you can configure the fonts size of your desktop, and increase it in your programs, but sometimes (for instance, surfing the web) can be a problem.

I'm very pleased with the laptop. However, I found a problem...: After some hours front the display, writing text over white background (Office tasks: Word, etc..) or typing code, my eyes were damaged. I felt intense irritations.

I work about 10-14 hours everyday with computers since years ago, and I never had problems with my eyes. But... I always have worked with matte displays.

Truelife is perfect for working with images or graphic design but I think that is uncomfortable for work 10-14 hours every day writing text, typing code or reading the web. Yes, I'm sure that the glossy surface of the display hurt my eyes after some hours working over white and brilliant background.

I remember you that I initially wanted the WUXGA 2CCFL screen but, in the last budget, my rep sales put it WUXGA RGBLED without cost...

For these reasons I have took the sad decision of return the laptop to Dell :(:(

However the machine was great and I'll order again (in a few months) with a matte screen. Related to this, It would be perfect that Dell offers RGBLED Antiglare screen in M4400 (such as M6400). I've sent these request to Ideastorm (http://dellideas.secure.force.com/ideaView?id=087700000000LAJAA2).

    Thank you for all!!

    Hi checho

I just received my M4400 with the dual CCFL 1920x1200 display. It's beautiful: sharp, vivid colors, even backlight with no bleeding, great viewing angles ... and no reflections ^^

I'll try and upload some pics in a day or two.

    Thank you Jonty!

By the way, it would be perfect a side by side comparative between RGBLED and 2CCFL.

Anyone know what is the difference, about consumption terms, of 2CCFL vs RGBLED?

the 2ccfl is slightly lower power consumption than the RGBLED, 5w lower IIRC
