Hey cpaek72, any chance you could weigh your M4400 (with battery in) and post it?

Thing is, it's not just texture, but if it has a "cold" touch to it that makes it metal. If you have ever felt the D-series of Latitude and Precision notebooks you'd get what I mean. I wouldn't have called any of those metal, and they certainly didn't feel like metal either. Unless the two people who own M4400s and have said it's plastic so far have very poor sense of touch, or the paint really been slathered on, then it shouldn't be hard to tell. If someone is game to open up their new machine to see that would fix finalise this issue once and for all.

Well, from the looks of the paint that is on the cover, it doesn't look or feel like metal at all. It feels exactly like the material that is on the battery cover and the colors are identical.

Then are you suggesting that it has a fairly thick layer of plastic on top of the mag alloy, or one piece? And how did you come by one that was open? There are a handful of people here who have even got it, let alone seen both a E and M series disassembled, as you said you have. I'm sure a few more people will be able to confirm this matter soon.

Oh I know what they will say before I even call. Of course they will say it's metal, they have to make a sale, and it's ambiguous that "metal" can refer to the mag alloy chassis, which I don't doubt they telling the truth about. Thing is, their sales team is not their production team so I doubt that any of them really know.

it's about 1-2mm thick. yes, it's one outter piece. no plastic or cheap "rollcage" covered by plastic like the thinkpads.

actually i took it apart. i've seen them disassembled for a few months now.

haha look, if u don't believe me, it's cool. but i promise u the back lcd lid on the m4400 is one sheet of mag alloy with no plastic coverings except on the side strip where the antennae for wifi/broadband goes.

Yeah, all of the inside, the area surrounding the lcd and the keyboard does seem l like it's made out of metal. The out shell, the light gray, is really light, so I am leaning toward believing bluemonkey.

Not at all. But it's always good to disagree to get a good picture. That should make people think twice no (basically asking if you are very sure)? Food for thought.

However I still prefer to have it where I can touch it than rummaging around inside. The strip you mention is the same strip on which the power and battery lights are on (the ones that can be seen from the back)?
