got my e7240, the 1080p touch is amazing. Is the e7440 a lot cooler on the bottom?

I got to try out both at one point in time and found that the e7440 runs cooler on the bottom in general.

thanks for the info, I probably would have bought the e7440 also but out of principle of such poor Dell support I'll be looking else where. I wanted to do a clean install of windows 8 and after 6 call transfers dell couldn't even send me a recovery disc that costs them less than a $1. This company is joke for enterprise. I think, I'll be sticking to thinkpads from now on. Also I know the chasis is smaller than the e7440 but the bottom of the e7240 seems to be very hot for a current gen haswell. Is anyone else experiencing this, it's almost too hot to use on your lap. Seems to be a common case http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/laptop/f/3518/t/19533989.aspx

edit: Dell tech support is pretty useless. For guys who have the Dell 1601 wifi card and disconnecting bluetooth and mouse the solution is to uninstall dell software suite for the 1601. Then download version 8.0.0.230 from atheros http://www.atheros.cz/atheros-wireless-download.php?chipset=93&system=8

Then extract the Dell software suite for 1601 go the wlan folder and look for the driver inf. You'll need to manually point your wifi card to this inf file to install the driver for it. Also this card has some difficulty connecting to wireless N and NG mixed mode routers (tried it on 2 dd-wrt routers no go). Once I switched to G only speeds it connected fine.

edit: if you are experiencing crackling audio in the host machine or in your virtual machine. Right click the audio -> playback devices -> advanced -> choose 16 bit 96000 hz studio quality.

edit: for those with sleep and hibernate resume issues where the screen stay blank/black, uninstall the dell hd4400 driver and get the newest one from intel.

We just purchased 25 e7440s and have only had one unit with a hiccup, and it was with the 1601 card.
I contacted Dell, they sent me a new card, and a tech to install it.
    Life is good thus far.
These units are very popular here at work, I have 4 different units to offer our users, they by far choose this unit.

We've been using them since January.

As far as the Dell OS disk, we found that we could use any dell Win7 disk and the install goes flawlessly.
Instead of using the resource disk, we simply copy the dell folder, and the driver folder from Program Files prior to the new install, onto a flash drive, and can easily find all of the correct drivers from there.

Just got my E7440 (win 7), I've disabled the feature that sleeps the machine when I close the lid, but whenever the lid is closed, wifi (intel AC7260) is disabled. I want to close the lid and have wifi running.

In device manager, I've disabled the wifi from being powered down, in power options, wifi is max performance and wifi still shuts down when I close the lid. Anyone have any ideas?

    Thanks,
(I can't change the OS as its an office machine).

    Found a solution at :
Bios Wifi power management - Laptop General Hardware Forum - Laptop - Dell Community

But I want the system to enable wifi when lid is closed unless RJ45 is live.

Have you set your lid settings to "Do Nothing" when the lid is closed?

I'll check one of our systems when I can...
I do remember that the Wi-Fi antennae are in the lid, so that may be part of the issue...

I would right click the battery and go to power options then choose a non dell power profile or if you can uninstall dell power management software I would do that. Just let windows control the power profile and under the close lid option choose do nothing. Everything should be working as is. Seems to be some dell power profile or their proprietary wireless software. If you can just use Intel's driver without all the Dell non sense fluffware.

Yes the "Do Nothing" when lid is closed has been set (power managment/power profile).
Done, power options is plain win 7, don't have dell's power managment sw.
Mananged to enable wifi with lid closed from bios power managment settings (see dell support link above) , but now wifi is not automatically disabled when RJ45 is live.

Behavior is different from my prev experience with E6410 (and E6400 and Dxx) series.

    Thanks all for the help,

I tried this sleeve from amazon and it was too small.

I'm currently using this one which fits very loose but is serviceable. I like the zipper pocket for keeping a vga adapter, and I guess the sleeve is big enough to also carry my kindle and the power adapter.

I've had the E7240 for several weeks now and I'm generally pretty happy with it. I have had a couple issues with it coming out of sleep/hibernate, but I just assume those are windows 8 issues. The touchpad is pretty bad, but I mostly use a mouse - hopefully that will get better with driver updates. The fan has a little bit of a whine to it, but it only comes on when the cpu is stressed 100%.
