can you guys tell me what your idle temps are at? Using hwmonitor and core temp I'm getting upper 47c for cpu temp which I think is high for an ULV 4th gen. I have an 4300u

I'm on bios A08 and I'm using an intel video driver. I noticed that in the windows event viewer there was a message that the bluetooth driver needs to be updated after upgrading to windows 8.1, so I've installed the latest from dell's site and haven't run into any issues yet. The only thing I've disabled in the bios is turboboost, everything else is default.

My idle temps are in the high 40's (generally around 47-48C). I occasionally do some tasks that pin the cpu at 100%. When I had turboboost enabled my temps were hovering around 80C at load, but when I turned turboboost off my max temps are mid to high 60's. I can probably live with sacrificing the performance for a 15 degree change in temps. I also have the 4300u, and was curious if these temps were "normal".

I found that the usb charging port only works if the ac adapter is plugged in, but not on battery. This is obviously not very useful, as I would want to be able to charge my phone on the go. So I'm wondering if this behavior is normal - can anyone else with an e7440 confirm?

Hi guys I've found a way to slightly reduce temps and up my battery time.
Disclaimer do this at your own risk. Please start out with less aggressive settings or you'll have a hard crash and may lose data.

Intel has a program called extreme tuning utility (first disable turbo in the bios). Install the program and go the manual tuning. Now go to the cpu voltage offset, cpu cache voltage offset and gpu voltage offset. -70 mv should provide some stability, less heat, longer battery life. I went to aggressive with -98mv and it crashed.

Also whoever designed the fan control on these things is an idiot. It either is 0 rpm or 4000rpm. Has anyone got a fan control program to work with the Dell EC monitoring chip. I've tried i8kfangui even with driver signing and speedfan with no luck.

Also they need to redesign the dimm/cpu cover there aren't enough vents as the msata/wifi/card etc are also producing heat in a very confined space. Maybe dell can send me a an extra dimm cover I can modify and then send back to them. Very poor design and software.

I've noticed this too with the e7440. Something in between should really be implemented. But the fan itself doesn't make a whine or come on that often, so it's tolerable.

I did a quick check last night and it was around low 40s, but this was just with light browsing after just turning on the machine. It started creeping up to mid 40s and tends to stay there, so I think 47c is probably normal, given that the e7240 has a smaller chassis.

It's working as you describe (I can charge my phone or iPad on the go/couch - no nearby power outlet until today's home improvement session) on my M4800. Sorry I can't be more helpful.

Just to confirm, since you said it's working as I described, did you mean that you can NOT charge your phone on the go? And that you need to try it with the M4800 plugged in?

Just tested on battery with the computer asleep, and charging worked fine. I can test while shutdown as well, but it has worked for me in the past.

There is a docking spacer part that came out with the E7440 that is supposed to help align as you dock it, and it fits in between the large gap. Of course the laptop will still protrude 10 cm as you said. Given there is now a spacer part that can be added on, I doubt a new docking station would be made. I posted the part number for the spacer a few pages back in case you are interested, which I got from customer care.
