I'm Gentoo, so I set up all the newest stuff, including xf86-video-intel-2.99.911. If you have older versions of kernel drm, libdrm, xf86-video-intel, mesa and who knows what other related things, display corruption may be the result. So unless you provide specific versions of your stuff, not much can be said.

I received my scratch and dent unit today, and other than some obvious scuffing, it's a great little laptop. However, I noticed that the touchscreen has some nasty back-light bleeding in the corners that I can move around when i push on the display as well and make worse with slight torsion of the assembly/lid. In my experience, it appears that the glass has been over-tightened onto the panel. Has anyone else run into this or do I just have a particularly bad unit?

Here is a picture i took of the display at maximum brightness in my closet. Note that the exposure of the camera makes it look worse than it actually is, but you get the general idea. https://www.dropbox.com/s/g2akqez1zm7srcs/2014-04-09 20.18.41.jpg

Mine has some noticeable bleeding on the upper right-hand corner, but it doesn't extend as far as your picture shows. Maybe it's the exposure of the camera. In any case, I've read that these screens all have some sort of bleeding, so I've just learned to live with it, and it really isn't that noticeable during normal usage anyway.

I'm usually fine with a bit of bleed, but this is to the extent that I can see it in a bright room on non-white colors in the top left and bottom right corners where it gets washed out a bit from the extra illumination. Especially annoying when viewing media in fullscreen. I also notice it get worse when I torque the display even a little bit and I can see the rippling of the LCD being pushed against the glass all over the display. Can these assemblies be loosened or are they pretty much glued in? Otherwise, I guess I'll contact dell and see what they can do. I'm already liking this laptop a lot as an upgrade from my ol' trusty D830, but that excessive bleed is killing me.

That does sound a bit excessive to me. I haven't noticed it during normal usage, but I also don't usually have it on full brightness against a dark background. By the way, do you know which screen manufacturer you have? I have LGD03EA, which I believe is made by LG. Just wondering if this one has some typical bleeding.

This one is a bit more true to life, though actually appears a bit worse in person (especially in upper left corner). https://www.dropbox.com/s/02co4dgv1gixdpq/DISPLAY2.jpg
How would I go about finding the display manufacturer code?

Also, I think I'm going to contact Dell about this tomorrow.

Your second picture looks much better. I would say your upper left corner now looks similar to my upper right corner in terms of bleed. I agree it's not ideal, but it actually doesn't look much worse than what I have. The thing that would really bug me is a dead or stuck pixel, which I wouldn't be able to live with. Anyway, you can find the manufacturer by going to Device Manager --> Monitor --> Properties --> Details Tab --> and choose Hardware Ids for the Property drop down list.

I'm considering picking up an E7440 from the outlet, my only concern is the 34whr battery. What kind of run times can I expect in light use (web browsing and office work) and watching video?

There is some pretty bad clouding on dark images, especially in the upper left corner as you can see here. It can be minimized by pushing on the corner a bit. Still waiting on a reply from Dell via email before I call them.
