I found my E7440 a bit light on CPU power compared to the top spec i7 E6230 that I was using previously. A quick look at maximum turbo speeds etc suggest that the feeling is correct!

Thanks! Now to find a E7440 with 1920x1080 touch, webcam, 802.11AC card, 8GB and fingerprint reader. Outlet doesn't have anything like that. :(

i got a temp fix for the strange, loud cpu noise in the e7240 and e7440 if anyone is interested.

you can disable the C state for CPU in the Bios UEFI, the laptop will be silent again.

--> lost about 40 minute in battery in my case

Really looking at picking up an E7440. With my company Premiere account I can get exactly what I think I want (i5, 8gb, fingerprint, FHD touch, backlit, webcam, 802.11ac, 4 cell) for around $1500. By the time I sell my fully loaded E6430 it won't cost too much for the upgrade.

I know it's pretty new, but there is a lack of reviews on this machine. Can someone chime in on a few of the following?
    1) Speed difference on the i5-4300 vs i7-4600? From what I can tell, it is not much. I am not a gamer....actual business use here!
    2) Battery life with i5-4300? i7-4600?
    3) Does the 4 cell battery stick out the back?
    4) Keyboard similar to the E6430?

Thanks for any input. I'd go with the E6440, but I'm irritated it doesn't allow for a media bay battery any longer. Time to go for something thin.

    To answer your questions

1 - As you say, small speed difference in turbo clocks. That said the CPU isn't a powerhouse so any extra performance is appreciated.

2 - With my i7 I get 4 - 5 hours depending on use. I'd say battery life is mediocre, but you're giving up capacity for it to be removable/replaceable

3 - No, it's exactly the same size as the 3 cell. I see no reason to get the 3 cell for the marginal weight difference.

4 - Keyboard appears largely identical to the mainstream latitudes and is very comfortable to use. It's far nicer than the island chiclet style of the Precision M3800.

Also if you dock, be aware the docking port on the E6440 is right under the screen hinge so the laptop is far further in the dock than the older machines and is trickier to line up to get in.

Your dell e6230 wasnt using a ulv processor tho so thats definately soemthing to take into consideration when comparing. I just now pulled the trigger on a dell e7240 fhd touch with i5 4300 , 8gb ram, and 256gb ssd for $1060 after after coupon. It was a quick decision seeing it for new on the dell outlet, so if anyone is familar with their prices was this a good deal or could I have done better waiting another week or so :( .

In regards to the e7240, is the palm rest rubberized like the dell latitude e6230? Also, is the flex in the keyboard for the e7240 less noticable than that of the e7440 since its smaller (worried i spent over a a grand on a laptop and keyboard has flex) . My biggest question is how does the overall build quality compare to the x240? The x240 seemed like it was what I really wanted but specwise with 1080p screen just seemed way higher in price.

    Thanks in advanced.

1- I'll double that. These are relatively weak cpus, so you should aim for the fastest you can possibly get.
    2- Same here.
3- I'll double that as well. Mine came with a 3-cell and I bought a 4-cell later as well. Run time with 3-cell wasn't much beyond 2 hours but 4-cell is usable.
4- Keyboard is nice but be warned it has quite some flex (still pleasant to work with though).

Thanks for the input. Curious for those with an i5 to chime in on the battery life. If the i5 + 4 cell gets in 6 hour range, I might go that way. I have a couple of battery slices I use with my E6430 and E6220 that I can always use with an E7440 if I really need that much power in the field. They look like they will work.....I sure HOPE they will work!

I did see a review stating the dock placement, not a huge issue. I don't dock that much.....but it is nice when I am in the office to do LCD + 2 DVI 22" LCDs.

According to Laptop Mag Review an i5-4300U gets 5:52 on their test.
    NotebookCheck.net reports 5:17 with the 3 cell and i5-4200U.

An hour isn't going to make or break me. I think I'd rather have an i7 for a little oomp.

Thanks for the input all. Shame all the ones in the Outlet with FHD touch and fingerprint reader are 1600+. I can get a new one from Premiere for that. Maybe a 20% coupon will show up soon. :)

Well for the 10% off coupon you can use this:
    https://app.dell.com//outlet/enro...id=5089348

It was stackable with the other coupons that were valid last week, so if some more come out you might still be able to stack with this again for more savings.

    Good luck!
