Looks like evade beat me to it, but I can double-confirm the extra mSATA slot will boot an SSD in the E7240. Also, the 1080p touchscreen is excellent on it. It compares very favorably to the 1080p screens on our Asus UX31A's, with great vertical and horizontal viewing angles. I don't know if it's an IPS panel or not, but it's leaps and bounds better than the standard 1366x768 TN screens on these (which we unfortunately have a couple of them). I can also say that while the starting weight of the E7240 is lighter than the E7440, the touchscreen (and accompanying Gorilla Glass) do add a bit of weight to it. I haven't measured exactly, but holding an E7240 with touchscreen and 42WHr battery in one hand and an E7440 with 1080p matte screen and 45Whr battery in the other they are nearly identical in weight. I have an E7440 with the touchscreen incoming tomorrow so I'm curious to see how much heavier that one is.

Compared to the Asus UX31A, both Latitudes are noticeably heavier, but not uncomfortably so. They just feel solid, like they can take some abuse, especially the E7240 with the glass touchscreen. Considering the issues we've had with faulty keyboards on our UX31A's and the complete lack of serviceability of them, I'll take the Latitudes and their removable batteries, RAM, and HDD's, and E-Dock compatibility every time. Hell, we can't even remove the (proprietary) hard drive from the UX31A without voiding the warranty, as they put a sticker right on the connector. Who does that?

One other thing I wanted to add. I was surprised to see that the keyboard on the E7240 is exactly the same size as the one on the E7440, just missing the pointer and associated mouse keys above the trackpad. This was a very welcome discovery as I'd been expecting a smaller, more-cramped keyboard on the 12-inch model. I'm so impressed with the E7240 that I may get one of those for myself and give someone else the E7440, provided I can find a decently-priced larger capacity mSATA SSD for a second drive.

I have a E7440 Touch and Non-touch sitting in front of me. The carbon fiber look on the touch is a much better look than the silver on the non-touch. I wish they would offer the carbon fiber on the non-touch. The screen is extremely glossy on the touch. I can see my reflection at all times under the lights in my office. Looks just like the XPS screens

Each laptop is similarly configured with a 47whr battery, 2 dimms, and i7. The weight is close but the touch version weighs more. Also I think the touch is about 1/16" thicker. I can't confirm atm since I do not have a caliper here but did lay a straight edge across them and it was slightly taller.

    Touch Laptop w/ battery
    3 lbs 15.7oz

    Non-Touch w/ battery
    3 lbs 12.7oz

I have also taken apart the palm rest on an NFC enabled E7440 and the way Dell has it setup you will not be able to have NFC and the fingerprint reader at the same time.

    Hi there!

Just got the E7440 and I am very excited. So far this seems to be a great and stylish laptop. Two questions though:

    1) Has anyone successfully built in a 7mm HDD (or SSD)? I wanna try my luck with the WD Blue Slim 1TB (in addition to the mSATA 256GB SSD).

    2) What's the software for on screen display of volume / display brightness / keyboard backlight? It doesn't show up in my drivers list on Dell's website.

    Thanks so much!

Edit: I realize I have not been very specific. So here is a little more detail.

I am using Windows 7 64bit on the E7440, an OS supported on this machine by Dell. With my former laptop, the E6420, there were two choices for OSD: ControlPoint or FeatureEnhancementPack. The latter doesn't fully work with the E7440; I haven't even tried ControlPoint. There must be a software offering OSD (for display brightness, volume, and keyboard backlight), right?

Is there anyway for non-premier customer to order e7440 with NON-TOUCH 1920x1080 screen in US?

I've been waiting for this customization option to come out since September, and still no luck...

Matte screen laptop is a MUST for me.

I had this same problem with my Latitude E4300 and E4310 laptops several years ago (using DVI with dell U2408 monitor via docking station). Seems like it must be a problem with dell's video card driver, hopefully they'll get around to fixing it at some point. I didn't have display port back then so i had to switch to VGA to fix it which aggravated me at the time (due to the loss of quality).

Call them, Dell Small Business. That's what I did, they were able to configure it to my needs.

I do have a weird issue from time to time, when using the touchpad to move mouse it can suddenly stop registering (pointer stops). Any ideas?

Hope, I'm not bothering anyone by posting this one question a second time, but it would be extremely helpful if someone could name the software/driver responsible for an on-screen display for volume/brightness/keyboard back-light for Windows 7 on the E7440. The laptop can be ordered with Windows 7, so someone must know ; )

    Thanks so much!!!

Has anybody tried the E7440 with an i3-4010u processor yet? I've seen no mention of it anywhere on the Dell site; the lowest processor they list is the i5-4200U. The reason I ask is that I ordered an E7440 from the Dell Outlet yesterday with one, though at the time I didn't think to check the processor as I assumed that the lowest it'd have was the i5-4200u. It has pretty much the specification I wanted otherwise (1080p display, 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD), so I don't really want to cancel the order, but if the i3-4010u is awful they I may have to. If anybody has any experience of it, I would be grateful to hear your opinion :)
