    Hi MatzeXXX,

I've ordered an E7440 in Germany with preinstalled Windows7 and an additional DVD for Windows 8. By default there was no software installed that displays this Information on the screen. So I'm not sure if such a software exists for Windows 7, if it is not installed on the preinstalled image.
In Windows 8 and 8.1 such an on-screen display of the brightness is integrated in the OS.

Sorry that I cannot point you to a driver or software.

Thanks so much for your reply! One option might be to look at the software available for the E6430u, and see what's there. I'll do that soon.

    Again thanks!

I'm hoping to get more people's impressions of the 12" screen at 1920x1080? I've always had the 12" Latitudes (D410, D430, and now my favorite E4200 at 1280x800) and really want an E7240 with the touchscreen. I do use a dock and external monitor some days, but other days I work long hours in front of the laptop screen. Resolutions keep getting higher, and my eyes keep getting older....(just turned 50).

Any impressions? How's your eyesight? Did you choose to increase font sizes or DPI settings? Using Win7 or Win8? Anyone running Outlook/Word/Excel 2010?

Just wanted to let you guys know I am also seeing the screen flickering issue on multiple 7220 and 7440's here in my office. The computers are also docked.

    I received my E7440 on Friday afternoon, and I spent a bit of time playing with it yesterday. My overall impression of the laptop is very positive. The build quality is certainly up to the usual Latitude standard. I am pleased with the display, which is a vast improvement over the display in my x201s, especially in respect to viewing angles. As far as I am concerned, 1920 x 1080 on a 14" display is pretty much perfect. With the 3 cell battery it weighs 1.6kg, which is exactly the same as the x201s with a 9 cell battery. While I was happy to see the inclusion of the docking station port, I have to question the logic of it's placement towards the rear of the laptop instead of in the centre. It takes up a lot of space (and looks pretty terrible) when docked;

I also struggled to get my external displays to work properly via the docking station. Surprisngly it wasn't the 30" 2560 x 1600 display that caused me grief, however; it was the old 1600 x 1200 display that was problematic. For some bizarre reason, the display driver that Dell provides offers only four resolutions; 800 x 600, 1024 x 768, 1280 x 1024 and 1920 x 1080. They also removed the ability to configure a custom resolution from the control panel, so I thought I was going to be out of luck. Fortunately I stumbled across an Intel KB article that describes how to add a custom resolution via the program called "CustomModeApp.exe" in C:\Windows\System32\. After fiddling around for a bit, I was successful in getting my main screen at 2560 x 1600 and the second screen at 1200 x 1600 in portrait mode.

I have decided that I want more processing power, so I'll be sending this particular laptop back. I found another one on the Dell Outlet with the i5-4300u processor, 8GB RAM and the 1920 x 1080 display, so I ordered it. It should arrive before Christmas, which is a bonus!

If anybody else has any questions about the E7440 let me know, and I'll try to answer them.

How much noise does the system make? Is the fan always on? How good is the build quality, how is the keyboard, the same quality as the precision? And how good is the screen ?

    Regards

I'm also interested in hearing about the e7440 keyboard quality (in comparison with the current Lenovo T440 keyboards) and the quality of the 1920x1080 NON-Touch FHD screen. Is it an IPS display? If so, is there any graininess or screen-door effect to it? Has anyone looked at the screen IDs for that specific display type?

EDIT: Oh, and one final question, is the palm rest area that goes around the keyboard a smooth material or is it soft, like a microfiber / felt-like textured material. I ask because my e6430 Latitude from work has that soft textured material which I find very weird to the touch and hard to get used to.

Any and all info is truly appreciated!

    Thanks in advance!

The keyboard of the E7440 is a mixed back to me. I had a lot of supposedly double pressed buttons at first, so I got a replacement for the keyboard which definitely helped, but I still happen to have some double presses. Since I used to have the E6420 before the E7440, with a similar keyboard (at least it seems similar to me), I was suprised this new one does feel rather different. I can't be more specific though, since it's really a very personal experience I reckon.

The palm rest material seems to be of the soft felt like variety again. Shows fingerprints easily. Apart from that I don't mind it.

Use the wireless dock! : ) I can recommend it! It's named D5000.
