I just received my E6510 about three hours ago and have been working on a clean installation with the Crucial C300 SSD. I will try to get some photos up tomorrow night and then post my initial impressions by this weekend.

    hi mfranz8,

    lucky you.

i ordered my on april 15th, the original delivery date was april 28th, some days ago it changed to mai 17th :(
    it's a Core i7-820QM, but i think it's the red cover that's missing here ;)

btw: why did you choose the Crucial C300 SSD? I'm looking into an ssd myself, but prefer the ocz vertex turbo (120gb)

Any comments on the noise level (of the fan, not the HDD)? Is it nearly inaudible when idle/under light load? Also, any of you tried any modern games on the E6510 yet? (I know the GPU is poor for gaming, but still).

    Is it already "in production"?

I'm just speculating here, but it sounds like their ordering system keeps track of how long an order is open, and probably starts impacting the salesman's commission if it's open too long. This would drive the behavior where the salespeople (or whoever) cancels and reorders the system before the time is up, thereby ensuring a full commission. They probably go into the system and record the reason for canceling as a customer phone call, because if you canceled through the web site it would leave a paper trail.

Obviously this would be a hole in their system.

Maybe, i dont know how dell handles comissions for their employees.
My order is now in production, after being less than 24 hours in pre-production.

The fan is nearly inaudible when idle/light load. In a normal office environment you wouldn't hear it at all. Only time I really noticed it was running the Windows 7 performance index.

The 500GB HDD is also near inaudible.

The 1080p screen has nice, even backlighting, no "looking through a hole" with dark corners that seem to plague so many other screens. Not as wide a viewing angle or the brightness of the Studio 17 RGBLED screen that I had briefly about a year ago. However, this 1080p screen doesn't have the exaggerated reds the RGBLED screen had. All around I'd say it's a very nice screen for everyday work. I found an unintended benefit in that the 1080p screen allows the XP Mode window to run at a respectable 1440x900 with clear, though small fonts, and some Windows 7 desktop icons still visible.

The Latitude ON Flash is kinda nice, but I thought it should have been quicker to boot. You could wait an extra few seconds and get the full Windows 7 experience out of sleep.

Other than Norton 2010 and Roxio, the system didn't seem overly "bloated" with excessive crapware. I'm just going to uninstall Norton and not bother with a clean install of 7 and the associated driver hunt.

The 9 cell battery sticks out the back far enough that I'm going to need a slightly larger backpack. The Targus pack I use now fits my Inspiron 6400 perfectly, but the E6510 is really tight in there.

I would have more comments but I had to return my E6510 because my sales guy screwed up and ordered the regular, not backlit keyboard. My new EDD is May 10.

Well, it was "in production" from the start. Haven't seen any other status so far.
But I also ordered a docking station, so may be it is the reason for the "in production" status.

I haven't really pushed the system yet but the fan, when on, doesn't make much noise. I have the Nvidia GPU and most of the time when I'm just browsing the internet the fan isn't on. With an SSD the system is completely silent.
