I haven't had a chance to really test the batteries yet and the battery meter changes status constantly but I'd say 4+ hours for 6 cell and 6+ for 9 cell when surfing using wifi. I have the screen at 30% brightness, Aero enabled and the Nvidia GPU.

I received my laptop yesterday. Here are my remarks:

    1) I had to reload it from scratch with Win7 to get up to 64-bit Ultimate so I can bitlocker the drive. On trying to load it from the boot DVD, it won't install to the physical disk because it is partitioned with MBR and the BIOS itself is EFI. Win7 will only install on GPD disks if you have an EFI BIOS. So I had to wipe the whole drive clean, including all the default Dell partitions.

Procedure was to get to the "Where do you want to install Windows?" screen, then hit Shift-F10 to get a command prompt, then run diskpart and do a "select disk 0" and a "clean", then install from there.

    2) The HD screen is BEAUTIFUL. Viewing angles are great. However, if you're using the default Dell load you'll have to "fix" your fonts down to 100% (they ship with fonts at 125% sized) to get everything to look correct.

    3) Touchpad is smooth as butter. No glitches so far.

    4) Keyboard is great.

    5) Overall fit and finish is EXCELLENT.

    6) It sucks down CPU like a drunken sailor. I have the Core i7 and GeForce combination and I'm out of battery in 3 hours or so of use. There was an option in the BIOS to disable cores, and I may need to play with that to gain battery life.

Overall I love the laptop so far. :)

Rackley, thanks for sharing your impressions! Many people here want to know if there are problems with the Core i7 in E6510 (as in some laptops): is your laptop hot and loud or cool and quiet? Secondly, is there any flex in the keyboard?

For what I've used it for so far, it does indeed get pretty stinking hot on the lower left side (which is where the heat sink/fan is). However, most of what I've used it for is pretty abnormal (complete OS reload, visual studio 2010 load, office 2010 load, copying all data from previous laptop, etc).

During normal idle-ish usage, it's warm but not hot.

In all scenarios it's pretty quiet (a subjective measurement).

Also, going into the BIOS and capping the system to using 2 cores seems to help with power usage without affecting performance that much.

Keyboard flex: If you mash down on a key pretty hard it will flex - but then again so does my desktop keyboard. For normal usage it's pretty solid.

after nearly 3 years on my d630, i decided to upgrade and just pulled the trigger on the e6510 last week, it's w/ fedex now, to be delivered tomorrow. i spec'ed mine out w/ the core i5, 8gb, 1080p, bluetooth, 3x3 intel n, backlit keyboard, and a few other options...but i'll post some info on heat and battery life on the core i5 as soon as i get it and have time to play w/ it.

my biggest concerns are those 2 things (heat and battery). my d630 w/ c2d 2ghz has always had great battery life and low heat...even after 2.5 years, i'm still getting over 4 hours on the original 6-cell and a 4 month old d-bay replacement battery...i originally got around 6 w/ these 2 batteries. i will pick up a 9 cell if necessary but i really wanted to avoid it since the 6510 is going to add significant size/weight over my d630.

anyway, more to come...the posts about the 1080p are getting me excited. can't wait to have the extra real-estate for development work.

I'd assume you're in the U.S. When did you order and when was the original EDD? Thanks!

Rackley, thanks for your reply! Taking into consideration what you`ve said I wonder why one needs to buy a quad core computer if he`d want to switch off half of those cores...and that crazy battery consumption... Of course it`s always tempting to get a more powerful machine, but, at least in my opinion, laptop is a mobile computer, where it`s low emissions and temperature and battery life overweight other things. I`ll go for I-540, I think... Will write about it as soon as I get it. Cheers!
