Currently running Win XP Pro on my E6400.

Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor says the following about my NVIDIA Quadro NVS 160M:

"Your current graphics adapter won't support the Windows Aero interface."

    Is that really true?

Yeah I got the same thing when I ran the same program, and several people at work have E6400's running Win7 with no such issues with aero.

I use Windows 7 Beta and RC... and Aero works perfectly. I am about to put the final version. The reason why it says that, is that this GPU is probably not in this Adviser database as it's a GPU exclusive to the Latitude E6400/E6500.

Anyway, it will be fun for you to finally unlock your laptop hardware and actually use them at their full potential. Shame you skipped Vista. Anyway, I just hope you plan to put Win7 64-bit.

Ordered an e6400 from the outlet a couple days ago with these specs:
    - 2.66GHz, 6M L2 Cache, 1066MHz FSB
    - 4 GB memory
    - 160 GB 7200rpm drive
    - Windows XP Pro with Vista Business License
    - 8X DVD +/- RW
    - Back-lit Keyboard
    - WXGA+
    - fingerprint reader
    - Intel 5300 WiFi
    - 256MB NVIDIA Quadro NVS 160M
    - 6 cell battery

Anyone know what the "Intel vPro Secure Advanced Hardware Enabled Systems Management" is? It has that, but after reading the description on Dell's website, it doesn't sound like anything I'll ever use. Does having it enabled affect performance at all?

I want to upgrade to Win7. Since it's got XP, I don't think it's eligible for the free upgrade from Dell, since I think that only systems using Vista qualify. What is the Vista Business License?

Assuming it's not eligible for the free upgrade, is the $30 student Win7 upgrade (http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=418645) my best option?

It should still be eligible for the free Win7 upgrade. I'm fairly certain outlet machines count. Even the XP machines have Vista Business licenses. Call Dell and see if they'll send you the media...
