I have a 250 gb drive. It makes a soft sound, like the fan at its slowest speed.

Doesn't bother me one bit, maybe you have better hearing or are more sensitive to noise?

Well, last night I tried the power setting changes for the 5300AGN, as well as adjusting the power plan settings for the wireless card. Still no dice. 1.0 to 5.0mbps on the "Status" screen. Actual downloads: Getting 60k download speeds sitting next to another laptop with a 5100 card that is downloading from the same site at 1100k+.

Downloaded the 'newest' Intel drivers direct from Intel to see if that would make a difference. Nyet.

Disabled bluetooth wireless (as some folks on Dell support found this 'fixed' the issue). Nyet, no change.

Getting very frustrated with the 5300AGN on the E6400. Particularly when the 1720 we have with the 5300 runs just fine, and the other laptop with the 5100 runs just fine as well.

There's somthing wrong with the card. Did you check if all the antenna's are connected properly?

yeah, i agree with LPTP -- i have absolutely no problems with this card -- maybe your card is defective. i'd contact dell for a replacement if LPTP's suggestion to check the antennae doesn't help.

There are also some HDD acoustic options in the BIOS. Try them. You can also put some electrical tape on the HDD where it slots into the E6400's chassis. This will absorb a little of the noise.

    That is not normal.

Did you take a look at the card and check that the antenna leads are plugged in correctly?
