The HP adapter won't have the Dell chip, so it'll always be unrecognized. Whenever you have an unknown adapter situation, Dell with throttle. So no, you can't use it.

    Hi,

According to dells tech specs on the e6400 (at end of page 76 in the linked PDF)...

    http://www.dell.com/downloads/emea/edb/Latitude_E-Family_Mainstream_Technical_Guidebook.pdf

...the intel integrated graphics can support up to 2560x1600 via display port or DVI.

My sister has this laptop from her company (and also the e dock +) and I am wondering if it can really support that resolution in the real world using the integ graphics. Actually, she would be wanting to run at 2560x1440 with an ASUS 27" monitor.

Before I order this nice asus monitor, can anyone confirm if the e6400 really does work at such high resolution using just integrated graphics? It would NOT be used for games but for office type apps like RDP to remote machines, VPN, excel, outlook, etc. stuff like that.

Kindof urgent, I'm wanting to order in the next day or two so that it can be delivered here while she is visiting before she leaves to drive back home out of state (she's just visiting me for the next couple weeks).

    Thanks,

    Ben

Strange. Because the review of the Quadro NVS 160M at Notebookcheck says up to 1200p, while here it says 1600p.

And I remember the Intel 450MHD being really 1200 max. I have an Adamo 13 that I was trying to get it working at 2560x1600p, but it only worked at 1200p and I did some extensive research on the chip itself. I remember my researching turning out that it only supports up to 1200p digital.

Additional reading shows that the GM45 chipset does not support dual link DVI.

[page 76 of the dell pdf] DisplayPort Single-link DVI

So, HDMI or DVI output from GM45 chipset laptops cannot support the higher resolutions. Even when using HDMI to DVI adapters it will not work at those high resolutions. Intels specs on the 4500MHD in the g45_overview.htm document also say that 2560x1600 is supported, but only via displayport.

So, I was incorrect in quoting the dell documentation earlier which I thought read that the E6400 can support 2560x1600 via DVI. Apparently this chipset with the 4500MHD can only use the displayPort (which the E6400 has, thank goodness) to achieve the higher resolutions such as 2560x1440.

I think I'm going to pull the trigger on the 27" monitor. If the E6400 ends up not being able to support the native resolution of the monitor (2560x1440) then my sister also has an M6500 with an ATI Firepro that can be used with the 27". She could then RDP from the m6500 to the E6400 for work that requires logging into their domain servers using that laptop.

I tried my Adamo 13 via DP. It only has DP. and it didnt work on my Dell U3011 IPS.

    Hmm..

Okay, thanks Dellenware. Question for you, when you were attempting to apply the resolution settings for your Adamo 13 and the U3011, which software were you using to make those settings/adjustments?

    Thanks,

    Ben

I tried it via the OS of course. Gave me 1200p as max resolution. I tried doing everything I could to get it running at 1600p.

I know it's a different system, but dell used DP, instead of HDMI for a reason. And it didn't work for my adamo with the 4500MHD.

    Hi Dellenware,

I think that if you apply the setting changes for the resolution using the "Intel Graphics Media Accelerator Driver for Mobile" software screen (instead of using windows display settings), then you will get more resolution options. That's what I've read anyways.

I just downloaded the latest Intel Integrated Graphics software version from Dells website for the e6400 (driver version 6.14.10.5420). I won't know if that will make a difference or not until the new monitor arrives.

Intel has even later version of the software on their website for the 4500MHD, but I'm going to try the version I got from Dell's website first. Sometimes the OEMs make tweaks to the drivers and thats why I want to try Dell's varient before I try downloading directly from Intel's website.

    Thanks,

    Ben

Okay, yes. The monitor should arrive early next week and I will post what the results are with this laptop.

    Thanks,
