    Can anyone confirm that?

From the photos, I'd assumed the 6-cell was flush and the 9-cell was the one with the lump sticking out at the back.

If you want to get technical, it does take a different motherboard, in the sense that it has to have 8 extra traces for the ram (or is it only 4?). I'll be curious to see if the traces are already present on a DDR2 machine. If so, then soldering DDR3 holders and "flipping the bit" in the chipset to use DDR3 is all you need. I'm kinda wondering if it'll be a BIOS decision, which means you could technically upgrade your DDR2 to DDR3 if you could get a hold of the memory seats.

fine, fine. the point is the motherboard itself can be physically modified to take DDR3 (albeit at a likely loss of warranty) just by switching the seats. So in the sense that the chipset and motherboard itself do not need to be physically changed but for the seats, it does not require a whole new board, which was all I meant.

I'm just splitting hairs with you, I understand what you're saying :D . I'm curious if the only "software" change is a BIOS change, how they will differentiate between DDR2 machines and DDR3 machines. Someone could flash a DDR2 to a DDR3 and break their machine (if it really had DDR2 ram in it).

6 cell is flush on the mid-sized ones as it is the standard battery on those systems. For the 42/4300s, the 6 cell is the upgrade and it does stick out. My pics show a 6 cell on a 4300

So, When is the release date for the 4300? If it's not available to order by first week of September, I have to go with the E6400. I'm also looking at the X200 and X300....but they are more expensive.

And just building on that last question, wanted to know if Canadians can expect to see the 4300 available to them the same time as when you Americans do. Are simultaneous releases across regions common for Dell?

    fattire,
I have noticed that the E Latitude series in Dell's galleries as well as your E4300 have a little rectangular covered "notch" on the right of the handrest next to the trackpad. Is there an unmentioned purpose for this thing?

Isn't that just the indicator that the RFID reader is located beneath at that location?
