    hi all,

it doesnt seem like the new 7490 model is a huge improvement over the 7480.

both models are pretty much the same chassic and exterior. the 7490 is not small or slimmer and actually weighs 0.1 lbs more.

If you dont need quad-core, then its 7480 can be bought at a bargain soon.

The apparent weight increase might be due to Dell being a bit more honest about the weight. Dell's advertised weights are "starting " and usually involve a configuration which is missing a few parts and a small battery. For example, Dell says Starting weight of 1.36kg for the 7480 while notebookcheck measured their review 7480 at 1.51kg.

Just found out that the 7480 I have got has a "BOE Model 6ee" FHD non-touch display. Dell part # 6HY1W

Unfortunately this seems to suffer from PWM flickering at anything less than 100% brightness.

    Bummer.

    Hello All,

My 7470 had some panel issues and Dell offered as a replacement a new 7480. Do you happen to know if the coil whine is still an issue to the new (if any) revisions of the 7480? I don't really want to move from one problem (7470's panel) to another (7480's coil whine)... Even though the offer is really good -and a big thanks to Dell for acting as real professionals- I am a little skeptical at saying yes due to this issue.

I haven't noticed any coil whine on the 7480. But the screen (Manufactured by Boa) did have PWM.

If you want to keep your 7470, you can just swap out the display panel (assuming that's the issue, but I get the feeling it's not).

I got it swapped three times already by Dell's technicians, but all three panels were defective. So they proposed a laptop replacement which I am about to accept.
Even though at the reviews I read, the issue seemed to be widespread, judging from this forum's posts it doesn't seem to be that much of deal...

The default panel had some pressure marks and all three replacements were defective in their own ways. The first one had severe bleeding, the second extremely washed out colors (!) and the third not only had a yellow tint at the bottom, but it wasn't also placed properly placed since there was gap between the bezels and the panel.

It could be the panels, or it actually could be the display housing/inner part of the bezel that is bent where it's pushing against the display panel. Replacing that part might offer a solution as opposed to the display itself. (the yellow tint one sounds like a bad panel.)

Try this if you still have the machine:

    - Load up whatever test you have for backlight bleed and turn up the brightness.
    - Wherever you see the hot spots at the bezel, try sliding in something flat (but not sharp enough to scratch the display), you could even use your fingernail to relieve the pressure from the panel and see if that changes anything.

Let me know if you figure something out.
