I found a store that had a demo unit of the Dell Latitude 7450. Keyboard seems to be okay. Not as good as the Thinkpad X230 keyboard, but certainly has more traveling depth compared to say Toshiba or Asus. While it's really good to have dedicated mouse buttons instead of a clickpad, I'm very disturbed by the long drop when pressing the button. The drop is so deep that I can see the touchpad partition! This makes my thumb uncomfortable when pressing because it feels like my thumb gets jammed in the trench created by pressing the button so deeply. Is this a feature of the 7450/7440 laptops? I certainly didn't encounter that with dedicated buttons of a Thinkpad X201.

Can someone confirm if I can install the standard 7mm 2.5" drive into the HDD bay? I would like to order the HDD version of this laptop and replace it with a 2.5" SSD which available everywhere since the total price is lower this way. (I've found that the HDD used in E7450 is 5mm thick)

    Thanks.

Samsung just announced their new mSATA and M.2 SSDs. Not sure if this helps to answer anyone's questions about what drives would fit into the 7450...

Thanks for sharing, but no, I think the M.2 version is 80mm long. We need 42mm (2242) long for the SSD that can be installed in E7450.

The M.2 version is 80mm long like BlackMiracle said, and it's also SATA interface instead of PCIe. So it won't work.

What we need is a 42mm long M.2 with PCIe interface.

Just tried webchat again. No luck. Will try calling tomorrow.

Can someone with Premier access see if there is a standard SKU with discrete graphics that I can reference?

    Thanks!

    Hey guys,
Can any of you with the discrete 7450 confirm which GPU drives the external display outputs, especially when connected to an E-Port dock? I read in one of the E7450 technical manuals that the 840m only drives the internal display and the Intel GPU drives all external outputs. I'm hoping that was an error because I would love to do some light gaming on this (TF2 from 2007) but I'd want to use a 24" LCD instead of the small laptop screen. Any help would be appreciated!

    Nick

I believe that the only SKU you could get would be for the "base" which is the mainboard with your choice of processor, GPU, etc. For example, my 7450 order listed part number "338-BFHV" as including "Intel Core i5-5300U Processor Base, Discrete Graphics, No Smart card Reader".

Hope this is of some use to you.

I think the wording on the manual is confusing, but possibly technically correct. I believe the intel graphics do in fact drive the displays. But, if the 840m is in use it does the rendering and passes the finished product to the intel side for the actual output to whatever screen you have attached.

Technical implementation speculation aside, I can confirm that my discrete graphics 7450 is definitely using the 840m while gaming on an external display with no issues at all. You will have no problem gaming on an external monitor.

Edit: I forgot to mention that I am also using the e-port dock, so you will certainly be just fine in your setup as well.
