Or just go for the 75% increase over the M5000M with the P5000. https://www.techpowerup.com/gpudb/2925/quadro-p5000-mobile

    P5000 = 2048 shaders at 1512 Mhz

My 'complete' guess is that Class 40 is probably similar to Samsung EVO and Class 50 PRO. So with a 1TB HDD already in place, Dell certainly places a high value on their Class 40 drives..

    Additional M.2 PCIe 1TB SSD Class 40 [add $779.00]
    ...whereas...
    SSD 960 EVO NVMe M.2 1TB $479 from Samsung - Class 50 I'm betting based on 3,200MB/s Seq. Read 1,900MB/s Seq. Write

My logic for the config below: Best Xeon since the bump is small. Fast GPU without going insane, Max memory since the cost doesn't seem extreme compared to retail and I'll never need to add more or have to chance dealing with removing the keyboard.

A basic HDD that will become a storage/backup drive later on, after I've recovered from the initial purchase and Amazon sends me these - at which time they should be even more affordable:

    Samsung 960 PRO Series - 1TB PCIe NVMe - M.2 <boot/progs>
    Samsung 960 EVO Series - 1TB PCIe NVMe - M.2 <VM's/some data>

    --------------
    Intel Core Xeon E3-1535M v6 (Quad Core Xeon 3.10GHz, 4.20GHz Turbo, 8MB 45W, w/Intel HD Graphics 630
    64GB (4x16GB) 2400MHz DDR4 ECC SDRAM
    Nvidia Quadro P4000 w/8GB GDDR5
17.3" UHD IPS Narrow Border (3840x2160) Wide View with Camera and Mic
    1TB 2.5" 7mm SATA (7200 RPM) Hard Drive
Internal Dual Pointing Backlit Keyboard, English
Palm Rest with Full Scan FIPS fingerprint reader, smart card and NFC
Intel WiFi Link 8265 2x2 802.11ac+BT4.1 (vPro) [not sure why this is an option so I picked it]

On the 7720-configuration-US-site I can select
    1TB M.2-PCIe-SSD and
    1TB M2-PCIe-NVMe-SSD class 40, without composer.

On the 7720-configuration-German-site I can select
    1TB M.2-PCIe-SSD and
    1TB M2-PCIe-NVMe-SSD class 40, only with composer.

This is in error on the german site, or not?

For my order, I think, it doesn't matter: It must be possible to move the NVMe-SSD from the composer-slot to the 2nd pci.e-slot and I have the future option to install a third SSD (crazy), or not?

My main question: Is there a performance difference between a M.2-PCIe.NVMe-SSD installed in a M.2.-PCIe-NVMe-slot or installed in a composer (the composer is installed in the SATA-Slot, or not?)?
I think, there must be a difference if the composer is installed in the SATA-Slot.

    Regards
    Ralf

The 2.5" bay has connectors for both SATA and PCIe. A M.2 drive installed in the 2.5" bay with the composer will get a PCIe connection to the system. That said, in the 7710 it was only two lanes instead of four if installed in the 2.5" bay, so it would not be as fast. I haven't heard but I would bet that the same is true for the 7720.

Yes, that sounds like an issue on the German site with the configuration, but you are right, you could just move the drive and then you would have a composer to install an additional M.2 drive in the future.

So, whats the best way to install just single 1TB M.2 NVMe (class 50), do get best performance? Can I just select it as primary HDD?
If I do that on the UK website it tells me:

[IMG] If you select a 2.5 Primary Drive you cannot add any additional drives. OR If you select a M.2 Primary Drive you must select a Second Additional drive and Third Additional drive. Please use the links provided to amend your selection.

Dell support promised to came back on that and I'm still waiting.

    Same problem in Denmark.

I would like an M2.PCIe as primarly workplace harddrive and also put my personal Windows 10 2.5" SSD in a bay and set this up as dualboot option?

Or do I need to get a normal 2.5" SSD disk and do the coldswap with my Windows 10 equivalent harddrive?

You should be allowed to purchase a M.2 drive without being required to purchase additional drives. if you are not, then it is an issue with the configuration tool. Perhaps, try calling a rep to place your order.

Definitely some bugs still in their configurator on the US site:

    If I pick this...

    1TB 2.5" 7mm SATA (7200 RPM) Hard Drive

I CAN also add this for drive #2...

    Additional M.2 PCIe 512GB SSD Class 50

But NOT this for drive #2...

    Additional M.2 PCIe 1TB SSD Class 50

    Because...

The 2.5 inch or M.2 with Interposer 2nd Hard Drive is not compatible the Boot 2.5 inch Hard Drive.

Which makes no sense as my understanding is that the SATA would fit in the SATA slot, leaving TWO m.2 slots. Interposer is new to me. Maybe the 1TB requires the Interposer - though that doesn't make sense either.

They're still tweaking the site because the 3rd drive option is now right after #1 & #2 instead of way down under OTHER.

That is quirky behavior from their configurator. But try this:

    for 7520?
for two drives in total, try with the 2.5" as the #2 drive
for one drive in total, set the 2.5" as #1 drive

    if 7720?
for three drives in total, try issuing the 2.5" as the #3 drive
for two drives in total, try the 2.5" as the #2 drive
for one drive in total, set the 2.5" as #1 drive
