Kaby Lake Precision pre-release discussion (5520 / 7520 / 7720)

What we know so far...

The Precision 5520 has a page up a Dell with pictures and the full specs. It is not yet available for sale.

It is very similar to the 5510 and the new XPS 15. It has Kaby Lake CPU options, but apparently a refreshed NVIDIA Maxwell-based GPU, the Quadro M1200.

The Precision 7720 was announced at CES, to be available for order at the end of February. (Thanks @awalt for noticing it first, in the 7710 thread.)
It is pretty much just like the Precision 7710, but with Kaby Lake CPU and NVIDIA Pascal GPU options. They are marketing it as "VR ready".

It will also be available with Intel Skylake CPUs. Microsoft only supports Windows 7 on Skylake, not Kaby Lake. (That probably means that Dell will only sell you Windows 7 pre-installed on a Skylake configuration.)

Presumably the Precision 7520 will be released at the same time, with a 15" form factor, lower end GPUs, and only one M.2 slot. I haven't seen any mention of it yet, though.

The Quadro P5000 has the same shader count as a mobile GeForce 1070, but more memory. The Quadro P3000 has the same specs as a mobile GeForce 1060. 15" systems are getting refreshed Maxwell-based Quadros.

 

its a shame about the keyboard and the gpu being maxwell instead of pascal based quadro.

At this point, the only advantage is top end xeon cpu can turbo to 4ghz vs 3.6ghz on 7700HQ.

XPS 15 seems a better buy even for work, then there is
MSI WS63 thin and light workstation has quadro P3000

 

Seems a strange decision with 5520, it's a minor spec bump. I assume because the lower end Pascal based Quadro's aren't available Dell have gone ahead and updated now rather than wait? There will probably been a few good deals around on the 5510 over the next couple of months for what is essentially the same laptop. Perhaps another update from Dell later in the year? At the moment the workstation variant of the XPS line has noticeably weaker graphics.

 

To be fair, we don't know the specs of the supposed Quadro M1200 yet (or the Pascal Quadros either, for that matter). That said, I'm expecting it to be weaker than the Quadro P1000M.

I don't think it's the case that Pascal mobile Quadros aren't ready, the 7720 has them and it appears to be launching first.

 

So I guess we won't see any real cosmetic changes until the next version 7730 or 8810 whatever they name it.

What about those SSD's I wonder if they are updated SSD's Samsung etc?

Also, I wonder if the HDMI is 2.0? I think I saw a couple of Notebooks that were shown at CES that had them. So I assume HDMI 2.0 will appear more this year.

 

It looks like the Kaby Lake GPU doesn't offer native support for HDMI 2.0. I imagine that Dell will stick with the configuration of the previous generation, having the HDMI port driven by the Intel GPU if graphics switching is enabled, so it will be HDMI 1.4. You might get HDMI 2.0 if graphics switching is disabled and the discrete GPU is used exclusively. (Also, it isn't possible to disable graphics switching on the 5510, and I would expect that to also be the case with the 5520.)

P5000 is about as powerful as a mobile 1070. That's a bit of a disappointment.

 

Sigh. Not surprised, the mobile Quadro is usually a bit below the top desktop-class cards in terms of shader count and clock speed. I would bet they are using the standard MXM sized module for these cards, and a 1080-class card would probably need to be a little larger (plus require extra power), but it has long since been speculated that it should be possible to make a 1070 card at the regular size. When I saw the 16 GB of vRAM figure, and since they have been making a push to get mobile (gaming) GPUs on par with the desktop cards, I thought maybe they would pair that with the same shader count as the 1080, but I guess not....

It looks like the P4000 sits in between the GeForce 1060 and 1070. P3000 has the same shader count and memory as the GeForce 1060.

And hey, the Quadro M1200 is on there as well, that's the one that we saw in the Precision 5510. I guess the 7510 might be coming with Maxwell-based Quadros as well, probably with the M1200 and M2200 as the options from NVIDIA.

And being sold along side the 5510. I priced a 5510 along side a 5520 with same selected options with exception of the gpus (2GB m1000m and 4GB m1200m). Price difference was extremely close and negligible.
