The 97 Whr battery is a zero cost option! Combined with an FHD panel and Intel graphics that should comfortably give a full day of fairly light usage.

But if you need a wide color gamut or just want to run W10 with a beautiful display, the UHD is a great option.

That's an artificial incompatibility but the type of people who are looking for all day on battery aren't likely to be troubled by the i5 not having hyperthreading.

And don't mind the extra power drain or potential display scaling problems.

Different users have different needs. Mine is light weight, a big good quality screen, good (but not the best) performance and good battery time combined with quiet operation and I doubt if I'm alone. Samsung is releasing a 15" notebook which makes the Precision 55x0 look heavy but it won't be available in my part of the world.

For anyone looking to buy, here are 2 coupon codes you can use:

SAVE35FMC will knock 35% off the (always artificially inflated) regular price. System already defaults to 30% off, so it only gets you another 5%. Expires 2/15/17
DOUBLEWORKSTATION will knock another 20%. Expires 1/28/17

So my currently spec'd system starts at $3,812, but with coupons it drops to $2,019.

FYI - specs: Xeon proc, 32GB RAM, 512GB PCIe HDD, 1200m graphics, 6-cell battery, Ubuntu OS, and (heh) a cable lock :)

Seems like 7720 does not tell whether e-port dock is still available or not, so hope that it is still there.

if they were too lazy to change the keyboard then trust me, they didn't remove the e-port. But seriously it would be big mistake by Dell to get rid of e-port dock as I don't have more than 60% confidence in a thunderbolt dock - as a reliable dock solution - requires it's own power adapter - plus a 77xx power adapter - plus a thunderbolt connection - and to work as advertised. I'll buy one though just to remove the "mystery" about if it would work from my mind

I'm excited to get a tb16 so I can backup to my mechanical HDD cradle connected to it at 80-150MBps - which are same as the esata speeds ofOLD e-port dock. It is fun being synical sometimes even though I really do love my laptop. Just laughing until I can find use of this dang tb3 port. I'm really being synical to the SSD vs HDD marketplace. If SSDs today were more affordable as a backup drive then I wouldn't complain about tb3. Is really the fact I want cheap and FASTER drives.

Unlike 7820, Xeons can't overclocked via xtu
    5520 doesn't support ecc either

So what's the point of Xeon on this laptop ?

I hadn't previously seen this Dell press release. Among the info is that the 7720 is scheduled to arrive in late February.

I also agree that it's unlikely (stupid would be a better word) if Dell remove the docking ports in the Kaby Lake refreshes. Users will require a transition period to firstly trial the TB docks (there have been plenty of bugs hitherto) and secondly to build up a supply of the new docks which constitute a significant investment. It would be prudent to leave the docking ports in some of the notebooks (probably the large ones where space is less of a design constraint) for a further generation or two.
