Kaby Lake Precision pre-release discussion (5520 / 7520 / 7720)

Yeah, a P5000 this time. Last time DELL finally relented after 6 months of badgering them and their engineers to fix the issue, they gave me a 7710 with an M5000. It was more to the credit of Kaeri Delephimne over at DELL than DELL itself.. as a matter of fact, their Customer Service reps were REALLY rude and dismissive. Kaeri was really helpful.

 

I just noticed a new display option on the 7720, "17.3" UHD IPS Narrow Border (3840x2160) Wide View with Camera and Mic". I'm pretty sure that wasn't there yesterday. Has anyone heard anything about the "narrow border" option?

Chatted with a rep (yep...) who told me that the "narrow border" option gets you a 4K screen with thin bezel. (Like the 5510/5520 I guess?). I guess that means that the screen would be slightly larger. He claimed that the video/color quality is the same as the "regular" UHD display.

It's a chat rep so take with a grain of salt. I don't doubt the "thin bezel" bit — that's what it sounds like you would get after all — but I'm not sure how much he could really know about the color performance between the two displays.

 

I wonder then if its possible to purchase a M2200M from Dell and install it in a 7510.

Also those new panel options for the 7520 look interesting with the "premium panel guarantee" label. I got lucky with the panel on my 7510 but I wonder if the new ones are compatible as well.

Is that a 'touch' screen? I've not figured out how to identify the touch models. With this size screen, I'm temped by 4K though.

 

It's only a touch screen when you actually see the word 'touch' in the description, so no.

I have only seen touch screens as an option for the Precision 7510/7520 (15.6") and only for FHD (1920 x 1080) screens. So, no UHD touch screens available.

The Precision 7710/7720 (17") can only be configured with non-touch screens. So, no touch screens available at all.

I ordered a 7720 through a sales rep. It will take longer than the instant gratification of the online configurator, but they will get you coupons that you might have trouble getting any other way.

The first day, the "17.3" UHD IPS Narrow Border (3840x2160) Wide View with Camera and Mic" was actually labeled "Sharp", and a sales person said these were very nice screens. If it were thin bezeled in the same manner as the XPS 15 series, then I think they may be some of the largest laptop screens available. Otherwise, I got a P4000, E3-1505V6 and 64GB ECC, and most of the trimmings. I'll post a review of it once I get it.

my question is: does the "thin bezel" for the UHD display prevent to get antennas for LTE/UMTS/broadband in there?

its colorful InfinityEdge display and its powerful performance. But what if you want the benefits of Dell's best consumer laptops, but need the power of a mobile workstation for professional 3D modeling, CAD or other intense tasks?
