Both of them will work. The deal is the LCD that you had to your damaged motherboard.Check the lcd connector ,it will say if it is an EDP or the most common one the LVDS.Your motherboard has to match your LCD connector.
Remember as well that if you source a new motherboard most likely will come without your servicetag number.
    Good luck.

Thank you very much i was worried i won't choose the right motherboard, yeah if that's it then it's easy i have an LVDS, and the service tag is no problem as well it expired 2 years ago, i just hope when the new motherboard comes in everything will work

Amazing, the amount of information in this thread (and others) regarding upgrading the M6800 from a FirePro M6100 to a GTX980M or other is just great. I've read through various threads regarding this type of upgrade and have decided to go ahead and proceed with the upgrade myself.

I hope my hijacking of this thread doesn't cause any of you an increase in blood pressure.

First, some information on my laptop:
    - Precision M6800
    - FirePro 6100M (although it shows up as an HD 8950)
    - 16GB Ram
    - I7-4810MQ
    - 1TB SSD
    - Docked in a PRO2x pushing a U2719D and a U2518D both at 2560.

Laptop is used for work and play. I use daily Adobe PP, AE, AI and PS. A couple times a week I get my fix of WoW Classic.

I wanted to upgrade the GPU so here is what I have on order:
    - GPU: https://www.ebay.com/itm/GTX-980M-G...e=STRK:MEBIDX:IT&_trksid=p2060353.m2749.l2649

    - K6D33 heatsink although I have discovered (thx to this thread and others) is that I will likely have to modify it as it appears to be the more common NVIDIA GPU heatsink.

    - 1MM and 1.5MM thermal pads and 3.5 grams of Arctic Silver 5.

    - An NVIDIA X bracket as it looks like the card may not come with one.

My laptop is currently running on BIOS Version A26.

Do you gents see any issues with what I'm getting myself into? I want to be prepared for any driver issues (or other issues) that I may run into while replacing the M6100 with a GTX980M.

It looks like you are in good shape for the upgrade. You will have to modify the NVIDIA driver INF in order to get it to load (if you use a driver version newer than 415.xx). The details have been discussed in this thread so see if you can just find someone who has posted a working find/replace. (Looks like there was some discussion just on the last page.) That means either booting the system in "test mode" so that it will accept the unsigned driver, or learning how to sign the driver yourself.

I'm looking to do this myself I have a bios modded k4100m that runs at 1ghz I'm interested in swapping to a pseries or gtx 970m 6gb the only thing I'm stuck on is modifying the drivers . When I decide which card could I give all the info of the card and the device ID and one of y'all who have done this before make a driver ?

I do not have any experience with modifying the INF files or signing my own drivers. I'll play around with both to see what I can't eff up. Thanks for the informatiion!

The INF mod is pretty straightforward...even I was able to do it. One caution (per the reference above) is to modify the appropriate "Section" line that includes the Optimus flags. I'm still using win7/64 so the driver signing issue wasn't problematic for me. 980M is now using 445.75 drivers and all is good (Doom Eternal is running great) except I lost the nVidia control panel. Still working on that one.

Try to install the non DCH Nvidia drivers version,it is almost certain that you will recover your NCP.

DCH only applies to Windows 10 and he is on Windows 7. (Time to upgrade... You can still get Win10 for free.)

If the driver is not installing the NVIDIA control panel, you can grab nvcplui.exe (and other files in the containing folder) from another system and run it... It should bring up the control panel.
