GeForce 980M, Quadro M5000M, and Tesla M6 are all comparable; they each have the chip and almost the same specs. Tesla would be least preferable because it does not have any display outputs and does not work with Optimus disabled.

Quadro M5000m or GTX 980m ...they are essentially the same cards so unless you have specific technical needs for the Quadro go with the GTX 980m. If you have any trouble there is extensive info in this thread. There is a way with the Quadro p5000m but there is about a 40-50% success rate. I was successful but even I had to have the card reballed and these are very expensive cards to be taking a chance on a used one.

I've been using a 980M in M6800 now for about 18mos...thx to this thread. The existing nvidia driver, 419.17 (Feb2019) is a bit dated, so to accommodate some recent games went to the nvidia download site and searched on my config: GTX 980M, win7pro x64. There were 10 updates more recent than the 419.17. Downloaded the most recent (445.75, 23Mar), however, the install failed stating driver not compatible with version of windows. Tried another one about halfway down the list (441.87), same result.

Geforce experience says 419.17 is most current driver. Something doesn't add up. Do the more current 980M drivers only work with win10 or ???

You must use a modded INF to install the NVIDIA driver, the hardware ID presented in your system will not show up in the INF file because it is an "unsupported configuration" (Dell never made a M6800 with GeForce 980M). NVIDIA did have generic 980M support in their driver from versions 395-419 (or thereabouts) but they have since "fixed" it in newer versions. You can mod the INF file yourself or use a pre-modded one like @bobmook mentioned.

Which inf file do you use?...they list a universal mod which appears more recent and a mobile mod.

Got the latest nvidia 445.75 drivers for 980M installed with the inf mod. Able to play Doom Eternal :D, all Doom games. However, when I attempt to play anything else I get (far cry 5), "video adapter driver not available" and "no suitable graphics devices found" for even the win7 games like hearts and solitaire. Thots?
