Maxwell is Maxwell, more or less...
Not all dies are the same, for example a 960m is based on the N16P-GX-A1, while a 980m is based on the N16E-GX-A1, they share the same architecture, not the same die.
Just like all Core I, Celeron and Pentium cores from a given generation all share the same die, but they have cores and features disabled due to impurities/failed silicon, that is done to raise yields..
Intel does, AMD does, Nvidia does, Samsung, Mediatek, Huawei, etc, etc, etc, its just a matter of maximising die output.

Most likely Tesla M6 are dies with defective digital outputs, so they get them fused off and sold as a Tesla M6, as simple as that. And even better, now its a Quadro card that as a couple bits turned on to allow virtualisation pass-trough, so instead of being worth 100€ they are worth 1000€

I didn't understand the lower half of your message, lost in translation?

TSO, it will make it around Earth soon enough. Not an SOC, its SOCHI, a packaged advanced processor circuit of more than one design. Most advanced stuff in All Light. DIG has it, I'll post it when I can. No joke, no fluff, just real advancements. I always knew it was illegal to etch a circuit, as they have to be 3D (2.5 is barely legal, no jokes) and also needs to be electronic. Think for one minute what would happen if a small bit of code formed an energy arc from direct current, organized into a spine blade, then you can get what's called 'straight current 6'...everything would run on 1-2 watts, same on voltage. I went to Cal Tech in the 80's, these things were easy lab work. I'm tired, way off topic and we should get back to my risk taking Dell decisions. When I get the DL, I will post it, we click install, and you'll know what I mean.

I'm asking Nvidia directly about the product, if I owned the company I'd only see them about 3 times a year and once every 5 years. Don't ask why I know that.

Cheers to all who keep this forum intelligent, liberal minded (not political), and into new updates, upgrades, and progress while enjoying computing!

I had to go and look this up...
The user in question is @supermoth and he did the Tesla installation nearly two years ago. You can read the story here (over the next few pages):
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/threads/m6800-owners-thread.736278/page-105

Looks like it ended up working after initially not providing anything on the laptop display when powering on. Optimus enabled may be required (the card itself won't output to the laptop screen, it has to go through the Intel GPU). Best I can tell, he never explicitly stated whether other display outputs (HDMI/DP) work or not.

    Aaron,

Well, glad we chatted again because it wasn't HDMI or DP. I called Nvidia and the Tesla M6 doesn't support G-Sync (new adaptive-sync). Truth, inspector might be able to force 120hz on the card since it is maxwell 2.0 but that is risky business. I'm going to keep the 970M and new cert g-sync screen before seeking another vid card. I am looking at 980M (positive results), P3000 (need more research but P5000 works in M6700, and long shot (no pun intended) is GTX 1060 Mobile (no max-q). 1060 is reporting some issues, same with 1070 but it doesn't mean they don't work.

Personally, I'd like a P3200 or 1060, P5000 just isn't within my demands and I'm doing well right now, G-Sync is just one more improvement, especially on the eyes and focus.

Bios changes aside, there are lots of tweaks and mods that can be done without a bios re-flash such as bios configs, nvidia inspector changes or registry/group policy edits. Much to learn.

Aaron, lay it out right now...what do you think???? 980M is safe, 1060 is better if they take returns for 30 days. I won't RDP blade card at this time meaning the priors like AMD S7100x, 2k cores, 8GB ram because it's a server blade card like the Tesla M6. I will research more, 980 on target 1060 in research mode. Missed a 1060 for 250 last month, P3000 for 250 as well, eBay, US sellers with used cards (Dell or HP Z series).

I sell the whole thing, get a new machine with a 1660 ti...good for a month or two, right ;)

From someone who actually tried the P5000 in the M6700... I had to go back to M5000M because the P5000 was unstable (BSOD every few days). I tried lots of things to fix it without success. I think that the power demand on the system was too high. (P5000 can draw around 120W while the top Maxwell cards are locked at 100W.)

@DynamiteZerg has a working P5000+M6800 config and that is the only such one that I am aware of that hasn't had issues from the handful of users who have tried it.

For any Pascal card you have to flash on a compatible, older engineering sample vBIOS for it to work in the M6700 or with Windows in the M6800. (Pascal cards can run in Linux on the M6800 without a flash.) You can't flash the card on the M6700 either because you cannot boot into any OS with the card installed (until it is flashed) — you have to flash it in a different machine or with a hardware flasher. You can flash it on the M6800 by booting Linux. Compatible vBIOS images have been found for P3000, P4000 (no turbo boost), and P5000. Compatible vBIOS images have not been found for any GeForce 1000-series cards. I rather doubt that you will be able to get a GeForce 1060 or 1070 to work with Windows without taking extraordinary measures. (See @JEAMN's thread on 1070+M6800.) I personally say stick with GeForce 980M or Quadro M5000M and if that doesn't meet your needs, start thinking about a whole new system. :p

I am perplexed. I am finding good deals on 980M 8GB and 980 6GB. Any word on the 6GB memory or bios? Are they unusual to Western markets? Both appear new and unbranded. They claim to work with Dell M6800 and that sounds correct. I haven't seen a 6 GB memory 980M on eBay or techpowerup.com until now.

I am picking one and going with it . I like the larger memory but we will see how the g-sync does.

6GB GTX980M is probably a GTX970M while the 8GB one is a real GTX980M, as for G-SYNC, it worked with my GTX970M and Quadro P4000 on my M6700 using Displayport output, G-SYNC on internal screen is far more complicated and would not work

Any here can share which .inf and section they mod for 980M in M6800's?

I'm "stuck" on older drivers that I got from Windows Update but noticed I get wierd stutter every 30-50sec or so while using Optimus and gaming on internal screen, when on external screen or Optimus disabled in bios, stutter is not there.

When I modded some 44x.xx drivers last time, stutter was gone, but gpu wouldn't turn off while on battery, tray icon would stay green, no programs would be listed as using it and according to various battery info programs and hwinfo battery drain would be around 30-35ish W.

I'd like to get rid of stutter and battery drain so plx plox help

I never managed to get Optimus working on my 970M and M6700, it would keep it constantly on, that's why I disabled Optimus, I also gained a little bit of performance by doing so.
It might work better if you modify the inf entry of an "Optimus working in the M6800" card for your 980M.
But 30mW looks like Optimus is working, an idle cpu is probably draining about 1 or 2w, which is a lot more than 30mW of your card, when my 970M was working without Optimus it would draw around 3 to 5w at idle.
If you think you are getting a battery drain it might be Optimus not working (and monitoring tool would be totally wrong) or it might be something else.

@darkydark Did you mean to report 30-35 W instead of mW? (Big difference there.)
