Generally X1 has 50-pin connector which fits its default 1.8" Toshiba MK6006GAH-drive.
The laptop in the background doesn't look like X1 at all?

Is there any clear replacement for the X1 yet?

I've been running Linux happily on mine for a few years, maxed out the memory, don't think a SSD would be a big plus for me, love the size/weight and no fan.

But it's getting to be about time to move on.

Samsung x360? Lenovo x201? anything else seem obvious?

    Thanks to all ...Lyle

I have also been wanting to upgrade from my Dell x1 to something a little more powerful, maybe with DUO processor. Sometimes the x1 hangs a little when I have many Firefox tabs open or am watching video in full screen it often gets stuck for moments. I have been looking at the Dell D430 although it is slightly heavier. I would love a Dell Tablet XT but they are still too pricey for my taste.

I have a small collection of refurbished Dell Latitude X1 notebooks in stock, some have 30GB drives, some have 60GB drives, all have 1.24GB or RAM. Some have minimal blemishes around the frame but screens are great, I'm offering them for $250-$300 which includes the nicest fastest performance edition of XP Pro, all drivers, Office 2003, Malwarebytes and other protection installed, ready to go and surf the net. I can even offer remote tech support for my x1 buyers if needed. Contact me if interested, thanks.

I have recently bought a second X1 but 4 months after, the LCD starts to flicker a lot - and it is just getting worse. Then i would change the LCD's from my second X1 to my first X1. And in the process - i crashed the old LCD. Now i have two X1-laptops, and no functioning LCD.

I live in Denmark and most of the LCD i can buy on ebay doesn't ship to Europe. (AND it's wery expencive too). Is there anyone in this forum that have a spare LCD or want to sell a LCD-display?

Did you by any chance forget to connect the palm rest ribbon? Or do you mean the lights on the actual battery?

Hey Gang - Thanks to all who paved the way for my X1 upgrade!

I installed the KingSpec KSD-CF18.1-064MJ ATA Device (64 GB SSD) in my Dell X1 and loaded a full version of Windows 7 Home Premium. I upgraded the RAM to 2 GB without any problems. Here are some benchmarks:

    12-15-2010 - Dell X1 – Original 64GB Toshiba HD (Windows XP)

    CrystalDiskMark 3.0
    - - - - - - Read / Write (MB/s)
    Seq --- 16.26 / 15.87
    512K -- 10.09 / 9.321
    - - 4K -- 0.215 / 0.470
    - - 4K -- 0.343 / 0.479
    QD32

    2-1-2011 – New KingSpec SSD after 50 start-ups

    CrystalDiskMark 3.0
    - - - - - - Read / Write (MB/s)
    Seq --- 79.78 / 21.26
    512K -- 75.31 / 18.98
    - - 4K -- 12.57 / 2.016
    - - 4K -- 14.38 / 2.241
    QD32

HUGE performance gain even for what is now a "legacy" SSD! Lag times for opening Outlook 2010, Firefox 4, Word, etc. used to be abysmal. Now the laptop feels frisky! 1.1 GHz processor is currently the bottleneck. System with many startup programs running stays between 500MB - 900MB Ram.

However, after a couple of months (and a dozen benchmarks) plus the normal install/uninstall of various programs and normal use, the X1 didn't feel as snappy. Turning off Prefetch & Superfetch boosted some of the (write) numbers - but not the performance.

Note: The KingSpec SSD does NOT support TRIM.

4-17-11 after Prefetch & Superfetch turned off & FreeSpaceCleaner with FF

    CrystalDiskMark 3.0
    - - - - - - Read / Write (MB/s)
    Seq --- 80.26 / 28.37
    512K -- 76.45 / 27.71
    - - 4K -- 12.59 / 1.526
    - - 4K -- 14.35 / 2.426
    QD32

    PerfectDisk in Consolidation Mode

Long story short, Here's my "Hint" - running PerfectDisk in Consolidation Mode before running FreeSpaceCleaner with FF checked brought back the speed. Yes, defragging the SSD and then writing 1's to the "empty" blocks really helped! The CrystalDiskMark numbers didn't really change, but the "feel" of the laptop is noticeably better.

4-20-11 after PerfectDisk10, then FreeSpaceCleaner with FF

    CrystalDiskMark 3.0
    - - - - - - Read / Write (MB/s)
    Seq --- 80.42 / 31.41
    512K -- 76.95 / 29.71
    - - 4K -- 11.84 / 2.393
    - - 4K -- 14.35 / 1.948
    QD32

As an aside... I took on this project as a "hobby" to pass the time while waiting for the MacBook Air refresh to Sandy Bridge (expected June, 2011). My plan was to install Parallels 6 on the Air so I can improve the performance of iTunes and use Plex as a media center (on a Sandy Bridge Mac Mini) while continuing to use certain Windows programs. What I'm learning is that neither QuickBooks Pro or Garmin support their products on a virtual machine, so I may end up with a Samsung Series 9 instead - or just use the X1 for QuickBooks and Garmin Navigation.

Please feel free to e-mail me with questions and/or comments - Thanks!

    Hi
Does anyone happen to know, where to buy SSD drive for my DELL X1 in Las Vegas? Can be Kingspec or similar.
However, it should not be very expensive.

Friend of mine is there on a business trip, and he promised to bring me this drive if I only could find a place where to buy it.

Its impossible to buy this drive in my home country, of course I could buy from web, but cheapest places do not ship to Estonia :(

    Thanks

I recently had a Photofast V4 128GB SSD hard drive installed in my X1 (I'm not too technically proficient, so I let the tech center at Tiger Direct handle the install for me). Problem is, 2 weeks later I still haven't gotten my computer back because, while the hard drive is working fine, it's only working when the computer itself is working - the motherboard now seems to be overheating all the time. I had NO problems whatsoever with overheating prior to the HD change.

Is there a chance the SSD caused the overheating? Or is it just a freak coincidence?

Is there anywhere to buy a new motherboard for the X1?

    Thanks in advance...

Sounds like the tewch didn't replace the heatsink when he swapped drives. The heatsink is just a metal plate that sits over the CPU and northbridge, under the keyboard. If it is there then maybe it needs some thermal grease to make contact.
