I don't think he REPLACED the heatsink, but he DID put new thermal paste on it. Don't know if that makes a difference...

Do you know if buying a new motherboard for the computer is a possibility?

Sorry, when I said replace, I meant putting it back after taking it off!
that's the only thing I can think of that could cause overheating.

No, he definitely put it back in place.

Funny thing is, the computer will go a day or two, constantly on, without overheating. But then the computer will overheat when started up from cold next time.

This royally sucks.. I was so excited about getting the new 128GB SSD in my computer, and then the whole thing basically dies! Bleh...

    Hi all,

Like many users here I have upgraded my Dell X1 to Windows 7. Everything went well and I have all drivers installed fine. Unfortunately however, despite the wifi card showing as working correctly, it is not detecting any wireless networks.

I was wondering if this is because the usual DELL utilities that enable the keyboard shortcuts (hotkeys) to talk to the hardware aren't installed?

    Anyone else experience this?

    Thanks

    Bob

I had a similar problem. Rather weirdly, the wireless could see all the other networks in my area BUT NOT MINE!! According to the Intel website, they are no longer supporting the 2200BG card on Windows 7, maybe there's a driver issue that they are not interested in fixing.
The solution was to get a Broadcom-based Mini-PCI wifi card. There are some on eBay going for <$4. It was a bit of an involved process to replace the card as the laptop had to be stripped down, but not difficult.

For me, x1+2200gb+win7 wireless problems went away after setting my Netgear WLAN box to "802.11g only" instead of "802.11g+n compatibility mode".

My router is a WRT54GL running Tomato, so no n- mode to switch off. But it must be something to do with the router otherwise it would not have been the only one mssing form the list.

hello everyone, newby here. What do you guys think of this?I just won an ebay auction for a used X1 for around 100 bucks and the seller(ca based refurbisher appears legit)says they can upgrade to 2gb ram(from 1gb) and 250 gb harddrive(from 30gb) for 60.00 additional.I know almost nohing about this type of computer but from reading part of this thread it seems I may soon have the only 250gig X1 in existence.

Maybe they think its a standard SATA drive. I have not seen a 1.8" ide drive that came in 250gb. Maybe its a new version, which would be cool. If they do have it, $60 would be a great deal.

Has anyone tried a 2 Gb PC2-6400 with 800MHz? Will that also work in the X1? And if so: will I make any difference in performance, or is it just a waste? Any expert out there, still? :)
