I have 800 mhz 2 BG RAM stick in my X1.
Same thing as always with faster-than-spec RAM: It works perfectly, at 400 mhz without any speed gains except faster latency timings (probably around 1-3% improvement).

Seems I'm a few years behind everyone else in upgrading. Will get 2MB RAM, (currently have 512K - useless!)
Also want to get new hard drive.
Has anyone installed MX-Technology 60GB MX-NANO 50 Series 1.8" PATA SSD - 50pin Female IDE Connector in their X1? Any speed tests or experience you can share? are the higher volume Mach Xtreme disks compatible with X1?

following previous post it seems the 60GB Mach Xtreme is 5mm high whereas 120 is bigger so may not fit. The 60GB comes in various form including ZIF which would need the adapter, but there is also the Nano 50 with interface "PATA (IDE 50-pin / CF50) " - I am assuming this will plug stright into the X1 without any adapter - can anyone confirm (I am not a techie!)

Not sure anyone is reading this thread anymore but I have hit problems upgrading my RAM. I had 256MB in my X1 (no wonder it was slow!). I bought CORSAIR DDR2 800MHZ 2GB and installed. However it does not seem to have recognized it - BIOS still says 400MHZ 256MB and windows only recognises 256MB - anyone any ideas. I've seen lots on google about XP not recognising new RAM, but BIOS shoudl see it - in my case neither does which implies maybe it is not compatible? but computer still runs with new RAM in - just it is still very slow. HELP !!

2Gb RAM should work OK, but I think it needs to be low density - 16 chips in this case.

MrRimmer, thanks for the reply - looks like you got it in one. My new memory only has 8 chips not 16. Kicking myself as I did read an earlier post on this. No idea why the density matters but it does! Just ordered another 2GB stick - hopefully with 16 chips on this time!

Good luck. Adding 2Gb and a small SSD has given the laptop a new lease of life.

I'm seriously struggling now. Having bought two different 2GB units neither of which worked. I think this is because I need low desity 16 chip versions, but the descriptions baffle me. A lot do not say if they are low desity or high density. Some say "with 16 chips, 128Mx8 chip configuration" which is confusing how can it be 16 chips but then have 8 chips of 128MB? 8x128 = 1GB.
I really do not want to buy a third one that does not work. It would be great if someone can be specific about a chip that works. Above I see people refer to the Transcend TS256MSQ64V6U but is the spec still compatible with X1? All the CORSAIR chips (the 2 different ones I bought were both CORSAIR) all seem to be high density 8 chip's and do not work, but I'm sure someone on this thread once got a CORSAIR to work so am assuming the chips they make nowdays are not the same as the ones people got a few years ago? Desperate to get one that works in my X1 as it is unusable with 256MB.

    Hi,

    I installed those chips 2 years ago, 100% satisfied :) :)
    Transcend TS256MSQ64V6U

    Good luck
