Look at those numbers, 2.814 MB/s with "proper" SSD is 280x times faster than 0.01 MB/s with CF card.

Hi all, my first post ... I took on board all the info on this thread - many thanks - and have upgraded my X1 with a Kingspec 64GB SSD [KSD-CF18.1-064MJ from MemoryC.com for about £100, and a Kingston 2GB DDR2 667MHz Laptop Memory Sodimm CL5 1.8 at £24. Both of these worked a treat with no hassle.

Then I downloaded the Windows 8 Consumer Preview 32-bit ISO image, put it on a DVD, and rebooted -- also worked first time. I needed to update to the latest Audio and Wireless drivers, but other than that it just works ! The only fly in the ointment is - as noted before in these forums - Intel hasn't bothered to upgrade the Video driver for Win7, so you are stuck with the Windows Generic Video driver, which only works at 1024X768. There doesn't seem to be any solution to that, that I can find -- anyone have any ideas there ??

When I installed Win7, windows update found the drivers and updated. See one of my posts on this forum:#233
It's an "Intel Corporation - Display - Mobile Intel(R) 915GM/GMS,910GML Express Chipset Family"

    Daniel,

Thanks for the reply. Windows update doesn't find this driver for me.

However, I went in via the Windows Update Catalog, and found the driver. However, it wouldn't instal straight away -- 'does not support this Operating System'. So I tried running the Setup.exe in Vista Compatibility mode (and as an Admin), and this got much further, but still failed in the end with 'Unknown error - setup will exit'.

So no joy so far -- maybe the next thing to try is installing the driver under Win7, then upgrading to Win8 ???

Any other ideas gratefully received -- maybe someone knows how to mod the driver ...

    Rob

I ended up replacing the Intel WLAN card with one that has a chipset from another manufacturer as Intel have stopped supporting the 2200 on Windows 7.

Windows 7 works very well on my X1 with 2gig memory, 7 likes to have more than 1 gig. Note that 8 installs a display driver that allows preview of the application screen, or aero, is that not interesting.

FYI, My turn to share what hardware upgrades worked out. I liked that others posted here what worked well with them and the X1. I love how quiet this laptop is without a noisy fan despite it's age. Based on previous posts, I decided to upgraded it with a Kingspec 64GB SSD for about $125.

Kingspec MLC 64GB CF 1.8 inch IDE SSD Solid State Drive | eBay

I decided to take a risk and tried a 2GB memory hyper x module from Kingston (KHX4200S2LL/2G) that I used with a coupon to purchase for about $30 at Newegg.

    Newegg.com - Kingston HyperX 2GB 200-Pin DDR2 SO-DIMM DDR2 533 (PC2 4200) Laptop Memory Model KHX4200S2LL/2G

The memory is stable and has been working great with latency rating of 3. I also upgraded the Intel stock mini Pci Wifi card with wireless N using Broadcom's BCM43222 Dual-band 802.11N card bought from Ebay for about $10.

Broadcom BCM43222 Dual-band 802.11N Wireless MINI PCI card NEW | eBay

The related card driver only worked for me using Windows 7 that I found here:

    Broadcom BCM43222 4322 mini-PCI a/b/g/n A241-431801R-02 Dual Band wifi Card 300M Driver Download

I could not find a Broadcom driver that could work for me using XP despite the link saying it would work. I have a nice 300 Mbps connection using this card with a Broadcom based Apple time capsule/wifi router. I wanted to post that I found the Intel 915 video driver software which I couldn't locate from Intel but found it using HP driver software package sp34749 which has the Vista drivers that can be run in compatibility mode to get the 1068x768 native display resolution in Win7. Also, there might be a interesting LCD upgrade that might be had later that I may test as the price become lower with another x1 of mine that has a bad LCD. The Dell stock 12.1 LCD Toshiba display (single lamp) LTD121EX9D may be capable to be replaced to 1068x800 LED by another same sized 12.1 from Toshiba. Here is the specs from the stock model from panelook.com:

    Toshiba Matsushita LTD121EX9D Overview - Panelook.com

There might be a need for a different power inverter for the newer revised model listed there but it maybe a find for a laptop out there such as a comparable parts laptop that would have a LED backlight display cheap to swap out with the X1 stock one. If I or anyone else confirms this upgrade later then please let the rest of us know which Toshiba model number worked here. Thanks everyone for their input.
