I have the same problem with Unreal3 on my dell m4400/1700m i just received. overheating then downclock. will attempt the BIOS revision and then wait for updates.

curious, does anyone ALSO have problem with slight video glitches? i have a small but fairly consistent video stutter about every minute with online vids, VLC, DVD's, game startup vids, as while editing in Premiere.

dell is replacing the card in a couple days. i'm not hopeful it will actually help. from reading this forum seems like a vid driver/BIOS issue.

btw, comp was shipped with bad wuxga screen. 1x1 faded area in the bottom left corner. like it was burnt out. they are replacing that as well...

@ Bubba I'm glad to hear there's another 1700M out there. Welcome to the club (me and you so far). :)

I don't have that problem with the video glitches, but I haven't watched any movies on it.

    hey hey.

bios a03 fixed the overheat/downlock problem. still gets up into the high eighties in unreal3 after 15-20 min if i dont prop up the back of the laptop though.

    video glitches still around.

    3dMark06 score (ran at 1280x1024) = 5440. 5671 with oc 625/925.

comp: m4400 running Vista64 with T9600 cpu, 4GB RAM, WUXGA screen, and 1700m vid card.

according to LPTP-LVR, it pretty much matches up with the 770m:
I have the same specs as lptp-lvr, cept for the card. that is VERY frustrating. where did that extra 500$ for the 1700m go?

also - Vista device manager recognizes the video card as "NVIDIA g96-950-gl". this normal? I am using the nvidia dell driver that came with the comp, is there another driver out there? nvidia site has no downloadable drivers for a 1700m, or any of the mobile quadros for that matter.

NVIDIAs site does have drivers for the Quadro FX mobile series. You have to choose Quadro FX Mobile series for the Product Series section. Unfortunately, none of them are for M4400s. Get your drivers from Dell.com for now, they output the best performance.

    thx for the reply.

unfortunately when checking for drivers on the nvidia site i get the "No downloads were found for your configuration." answer for all quadro FX mobile graphics drivers for XP and Vista.

for the record, i am using the driver 7.15.11.7607, same one currently on the dell site as far as i can tell. tried both. with similar results.

    Try the 7.15.11.7653 from Laptopvideo2go.com .
The driver is a Dell Release but doesn't apear on their side (strange, but the 176.53 gives me better results).

thanks for all your help everyone! final notes for those struggling with the same problems.

installed new drivers from laptopvideo site mentioned above. tech replaced card. still using A03 BIOS. new 1280x1024 3dmark06 score is about 6885 at OC 800/1000/2000 (note: started to see strange glitches in-game, so i dropped to 700/1000/1600 and its fine). no overheating and downclocking. keep in mind i tried so many things, hard to say what really fixed it. not totally impressed with the advantage with the 1700m, but it is definitely better than 770m, and the 3dmark06 is a an older directX9 test. noone has tested what the 1700m advantages are in directX10 apps? anyway, i have no clue about this stuff - just a thought.

tech came and replaced screen. all good. i know before purchase i dug through the forums concerning screen size, and I love the 1900x1200 resolution screen. i thought text etc. might be too small, but with vista its easy to up the txt, web browser, icon size etc. so im not squinting while reading email, and i have more space for image apps. downside is they dont have the led glossy (better color/contrast to be sure) for wuxga.

video glitch i mentioned before was a sound problem, not video. I noticed the stutter in only sound files as well, so I updated idt audio drivers from dell site and all good.

now i can work and game in peace. even after a frustrating month of waiting for the machine and a week of tweaking, im happy with it. ive had a few laptops from low-end 13" to a fatty $5K alienware and this still seems like the best choice for me (3D/Video editing work and gaming while traveling). ill never carry one of those huge 17 laptops on the plane again.

did i get to everything? im outta here.

That's weird, and I don't expect laptopvideo2go drivers to give you any better performance. Worse according to our stats.

Whats weird is that as a 1770M, you get 6885 with 800/1000/2000 and I've broken 7800 on the 770M with an OC of 750/940/1700.
