I'm getting a full refund of my purchase. I purchased in August. Time to go computer shopping again :)

I honestly couldn't have expected anymore than that. I knew it would be highly unlikely for them to issue a different model that meats the "like-for-like" qualification. So I'm happy.

you should hook me up with her info! if you can that is..

Edit: They couldn't do a refund because it was originally purchased on a business account so it would have to go back to that. We're doing a system exchange instead, still working out the specs.

Very good question. This was my first Dell and frankly I'm a bit scared to try again... Honestly, I'm thinking about getting a 13" retina MBP as my daily carry.

Nice machine, but you could be getting another machine with heat problems with the rMBPs.

I've only used Dell for a long time and have never had a problem like this. It was really hard to find a different model in their current line up though. I spec'd out a a m3800 on the phone with my guy last night, but I'm having him look at switching it to an XPS 15. Was trying to avoid the high resolution screen, but the have just as many configuration options as we do so I'll end up with the high resolution screen, and I'm holding strong on the larger battery. The only way to get that is with an mSATA SSD though so we'll see what he gets back to me with.

My gf wants a new laptop so she might pick up the xps from me and then I'll look elsewhere. Really tempted to build a desktop, but idk.

I hear the HP Z Books are supposed to be decent, but I haven't really looked at them. Could always wait until this summer for new releases..

Definitely possible. I've only used one MBP for any real amount of time and it got really hot. It wasn't uncomfortable to hold because it vents up by the screen, but it got quite toasty.

I've worked with MBPs quite a bit and although they get externally warm, the thermal system does a good enough job to allow for 100% CPU/GPU without throttle lock. They get warm cause the aluminum conducts heat really well. Its sort of by design that the entire chassis is a heatsink

I'd be extremely wary of buying a rMBP if you want to get a cooler machine as there have been reports of some throttling on the late 2013 machines too (though sporadic at best). Peak temp of 93*C according to NotebookCheck.

At least with the E6540 you can easily crack open the base and do a repaste job, those pentalobular screws are a pain on rMBPs.
