The sound on the E6440 is very good indeed, much better than my Vostro 1510 that's for sure! You can add a msata-drive, works like a dream no problems at all.

I have the iGPU-only model too, but I have the i5-4300M. While idling the fan does not come on, only very occasionally. When browsing and viewing YouTube it does however come on from time to time. The laptop does not get warm at all, the underside stays nice and cool. So I'm not sure what this heating issue is all about, perhaps it is only on the i7 models? Looking at the picture there seems to be a little bit to much thermal paste, you only need a very tiny amount and on the picture the whole thing is covered in it.

Mine seems to turn on CPU fan too often only when plugged, on battery it is very quiet, the fan is on, but almost inaudible. On AC power the fan gets quite noisy. After I turn on the system, the fan sort of screams for 2-3 seconds, E6430 did so too, but with much less noise.

Sounds like your power plan has the cooling policy set to active when plugged in (louder) and passive when unplugged (quieter, uses less energy). You should be able to change that setting quite easily.

Exactly. Changing the cooling policy solved the problem and now the laptop's CPU fan turns on only rarely (e.g. when playing videos on youtube). Thanks a lot.

    ...

My E6440 came with LG HD+ panel, LGD03D3 (reviewed on notebookcheck), which is quite bad. Considering changing the panel I learned E6440's panels are not compatible with E6430's and E6420's. It seems that panels from ThinkPad T420s and T430s are compatible. Does anybody know which panel is the best as for viewing angles and colours?

Does E6440 come also with other panels? Can you comment on yours? (You can use a freeware HWINFO for finding out what panel you have).

What is E6440's HD panel like? (I would not mind downgrading if it was better as for angles and colours.)

Yes, there is a msata slot the speed is SATA600 (6Gb/sec).

I have the 1600x900 Chi Mei CMN1481 / 5CJ82_140FGE, TN panel (same panel as the Dell Latitude 3440 see the link for display review on notebookcheck). It's not the best panel I've seen, but it's not bad either.

very good build quality and perfect inside for use a classic 1tb hdd and an msata...

but , this one ( i've bought it refurbished ) has a 2.5" ssd drive from Hynix named SH920 in the 128gb size....

it's normal that the speed of this unit is around 460-500mb in reading anche only 150 in writing ?

Mine weights exactly 2.117 Kg (with 6-cell battery, DVD drive and SSD hard drive).

I can get used to the HD+ display, it all seems to be just a matter of time. Did some research: an IPS display compatible with E6440 does not seem to exist.

Why does not Dell ship this computer with Windows 8.1? If I get an OEM Windows 8.1 and install it, will it store licence key into laptop's bios? (Dell provides drivers for Windows 8.1)

Intel AC7260 seems to have some issues with Windows 7 (It sometimes disconnects, Intel 6235 works better on my E6440).

Is there any news about next generation of E64x0 and E65x0?
